But there is a dramatic shift in the New Testament between God's people Israel (which is not ethnically-oriented - includes only the people who have the faith of Abraham) and the kingdoms of the world. All of the kingdoms of the world are under God's judgement and will eventually be destroyed in favor of God's Kingdom.
God's people, the Church, are not Israel. The Church is not a nation, never was. It's a community of believers living in other nations. We have Church laws and bylaws, but we are not a governing community with national laws, a police force and soldiers. That is still left in the hands of the nations we reside in. And these nations are to endure with the sword as a means to keep order and peace.
At the same time, that means we should be good citizens of whatever political structure we find ourselves in, but we should remember that we owe no devotion to political structures and governments when they undermine our calling in God's Kingdom. When there are conflicts, we go with what God has to say..
Ah but we do, by dear BB, we do. I realize many Christians aren't aware of this, but we owe big time to the governments of our lands.
Rom. 13:1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
We owe our nation taxes, customs, fear and honor. They are miniseries to us, given to us by God, who established them back at Babel. Nations are a gift to us, much like parents are a gift to us. They're never perfect, but we honor to the best of our ability, and we respect their authority, part of which is defending our borders and protecting us from evil doers.
