One of my college professors had a bumper sticker on his office door that read, "Send Oral to Heaven in '87." Now, that was funny. On the other side, I'm like Martin and feel for his family.

That is a funny bumper sticker.

Regardless of what one, thinks Oral reached many people with the Gospel and was God's man for helping move a significant group of Christianity into a major contributor for the Kingdom. His impact in last century was tremendous, there is no denying that. For those who came to Christ through his ministry I am thankful.

I hope and pray his family in comforted during this tough time.

There are only a few major figures left from the evangelical establishment from the high days of the church in last century. Just an observation.

Oral had some kooky theology, and he messed up on some things...but I feel confident in his salvation.

Not so sure about that son of his, though...the one who lived like a king off ORU's profits.

Praying for his family as well...

(but I have to say...do you reckon he's saying, "I told you God would take me home if I didn't raise that money!")

Regardless of the fact that his theology differs from mine, I extend condolences to his family.

Sidenote: He and his wife had been married over 65 years. How rare is that these days?

Guess his flock didn't raise enough money for him, then...

Seriously, sorry to hear he's gone.

I didn't read the article but he seemed to have certain extreme ideas yet on the other hand he also seemed to live a righteous life which is a wonderful thing. Of course My prayers are with him and his family.

A righteous life? He had luxury homes and jets. He taught people that if they gave to his ministry, they might get money back from God. He said that God would take him home if his ministry did not get 8 million dollars.

The man was a prosperity preacher and probably did more than any other man, except possibly for Kenneth Hagin, to influence others to preach this false teaching! Just because he has died does not make him a good preacher/Christian. He deceived a lot of God's sheep. I feel sorry for those he deceived.

And there are plenty others just like him. And yet many still will send thier hard earned $$ to these ministries. How blinded they are - its a shame.

I'm not a fan of the prosperty doctrine (I call it "Blab it and Grab it" over the more popular "Name it and Claim it:) He was wealthy true and he did preach this particularily bad version of the gospel. But how many mistresses did he have? How many people did he kill? Did he live a moral life for the most part? Are you claiming he's not a Christian? I don't judge him eternally but he seemed moral to Me apart from his name it and claim it doctrine. I mean the Hagans do it, the Robinsons do it, many other ministers out there with different messages all live very well. But Did Mr. Roberts give money to the poor? Did he help those in need? I don't know do you? I feel more sorry for those Benny Hinn deceived.

The mere fact that Roberts died from pneumonia shoots a hole in the message of those who teach that if a person will simply speak positively about any sickness they may have, they are not sick. I had a friend who developed cancer. For two years every time I saw him and asked how he was he would reply that he was well and quote the scripture that says that life and death are in the tongue. He believed that if he refused to acknowledge the cancer in his body, he did not have cancer. I said, "I HAD a friend." He died a few months ago....cancer.

I find no congruence between Jesus Christ and those who claim to teach, preach, and practice His gospel and teachings yet live a life of luxury, which they did not have before they entered the "ministry".
Just like I would view with suspicion a cop who comes from a poor background socially, has only his cop's salary to fall on, whose wife is just a housewife and/or a working woman, who is not married to old money (as they say).

The Savior said foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath nowhere to lay His head.

Whether he's in heaven or not I don't know, but all I can say is.....he's had his praises of men here.

I have learned to not be critical of preachers who have money. One could say that since Jesus called us ALL to spread the gospel, that if ANYone makes even a meager living off of preaching, he is no better than the rich ones. But I don't see it that way, do you?

No, I am not saying he was not a Christian. But that's not the point. He gave false teachings. Being moral does not include living the way he did or teaching falsely. We are warned to reject people who teach against the Bible. And saying that God would take him home if he did not get 8 millions dollars is an insult to the gospel and inexcusable.

Also, teachers are told in the Bible that they will be held to a higher standard.

The Hagins are Word Faith teachers, which is a false gospel. Jesus said to avoid false teachers.

I want to add that I do not think it is wrong to be rich but Roberts and people like the prosperity teachers have a lust for money and teach it, and this unscriptural. There are so many verses against the love of money and wanting to be rich. But these teachers, by doing things like teaching that people would get money if they gave to their ministry, were teaching unbiblically and leading people into deception. Look at the warnings against false teachers in the Bible - it's pretty sobering how God views this.
