Other-

It is a good translation, but I use others because they use words with modern-day meanings that the people that I minister to can understand.

You have thoughts?

I thought the other thread was stupid. That wasn't in your poll, but that is my vote.

In its context it was a good translation of its family of mss. Now we have better translations and I utilize those primarily. However, we'd be remiss to fail to acknowledge the impact of the KJV on the world and on most of us individually, and I am no exception as it was my first translation.

I think it's a good translation but not one I use most of the time. I prefer to read a Bible in my own language so I choose another one of the good modern versions.

Well,nobody will pick "horrbile [sic]version."

The KJV (of whatever stripe has its place) but not the most honored spot on my shelf. Other translations are favored because of their enhanced accuracy, readibility and other commendable qualities. Even way back then the KJV was not as favored as the Geneva. The KJV didn't reach its zenith of popularity until about 1750.

Besides, the KJV borrowed so much from William Tyndale that I think he gets shortchanged in the discussion.

While I love the KJV, I chose other because I do not advocate forcing its use on others. I also use and appreciate good modern English versions as well. The Bible version you use is your personal choice. :)

I chose #1 because what I would really choose isn't there. My choice would be, "I love the King James but do use other versions during studying and preparation." I never buy into the argument of people that the modern translations are easier to read and understand as the King James is written on a 4th grade English level. Yes, there are a few outdated words, but even my granddaughter can figure out what they mean without a dictionary.

We attended a church up in the mountains of North Carolina while visiting on vacation and the pastor read a verse out of the NIV, then proceeded to use the King James to explain the convoluted way the NIV phrased it. I looked at my husband and we smiled at the silliness of it. Why didn't he just read it out of the KJV?

There isn't a better copy of the word for sermon preparation. It has natural, flowing steps.

It was the only bible we used to defend the faith when liberalism was in full force. Perhaps that's why it filled every fundamental baptist pulpit and seminary in Canada into the 60's.

Cheers,

Jim

I am making this poll in response to a thread entitled "Those who hate the King James Bible"

I trust this poll will give voters a better choice.

have to vote for "other"

very good translation, especially for its time, and with the Greek texts available to them...

Are better. more accurate English versions available today, but one can use the KJV as their primary bible, if that is their conviction...

Gretaest tranlation ever made for historical importance, most used to reach people, not the best to use to study from today though!

Actually, this is completely false. In a real life comparison, I believe the KJV is between an 8th and 10th grade level.

Some versions say a verse better than another version. I've mostly seen it go the other way - a KJV read but then wording from another version mentioned (oftentimes the NIV but sometimes the NASB or ESV). My pastor preached out of the KVJ for years (35 years) but then switched to the NIV because he was always manually translating it to the NIV wording anyway! LOL

Couldn't vote-didn't like the options:

The KJV is an excellent translation for it's day but I can understand MV's better because they are in my language.

It's actually absolutely true. I'd go get out the proof but it's in the office where the baby is napping. Once he gets up I'll dig it out and post it. Naps trump message boards any day! LOL

Well, I'll help you. I've seen the reports of the KJV being on a 4th grade level and I'll discuss that in a second.

However, here are some quotes from various sites:

"The KJV is written on an 8th to 10th grade level. This has been proven from computer analysis made by Dr. Donald Waite. He ran several books of the KJV through the Right Writer program and found that Genesis 1, Exodus 1, and Romans 8 are on the 8th grade level; Romans 1 and Jude are on the 10th grade level; and Romans 3:1-23 is on the 6th grade level."

KJV = 12th grade

"King James Version (KJV, 1611) – Reading Level 12.0
Difficult to read due to 17th century English vocabulary and word order."
http://www.biblenh.org/index.php?op...s&catid=20:how-to-choose-and-purchase-a-bible

In my quick study, I've not actually seen a method that results in the KJV having a reading level of 4th grade but instead 5th grade. However, that's useing the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Indicator which only works off of word and sentence length. It has nothing to do with the actual readability level of the text. I can write a very easy book of short sentences of short words that make no sense and make it come up with a low grade level - but it means nothing to that age group because they just can't understand it.

Generally, the KJV is seen to be a 12th grade level text in most studies/grade level tests.

Fair version. I guess the accuracy is ok, it is the outdated language that for me that keeps it out of the rotation so to speak. They look nice sitting on the shelf but that's about it.

On this one I am in agreement with you.

However, I think the KJB goes much deeper, on a spiritual level, than any of the modern versions. I cannot really substantiate this with reports and the like, just my own personal reading and the "windows from God" that open up when I read the KJB. Oh, the windows open up with other translations, but for me, the KJB does it more frequently and to a deeper spiritual level.

That's awesome and that means that the KJV is the version for you. :) Keep reading it and see what God has for you!
