    From the Duggar's website: http://www.duggarfamily.com/2015/8/duggar-family-statement

Long-term treatment. I'm glad. I'm also glad that his wife, Anna, has an opportunity not to live in the same house for a time so that she can get the therapy and counsel and support that she needs all by herself.

I believe in forgiveness and marital restoration. I also believe it doesn't come quickly, easily, or without great cost.

Here's what keeps my mind burdened.

How does the church and the individual Christian family proactively prevent things like this from happening. It's my opinion that neither the church nor Christian homes tackle these problems before they start often enough.

I won't go into the destructive teachings that went on in that home and homes/churches across the world. Either you understand it goes on or you don't.

But what can the church - from a preaching and teaching and counseling and fellowship standpoint - do to protect families and to teach families to protect themselves?

Looks like he'll be institutionalized at the 'Reformers Unanimous' Home for Men in Rockford IL?:

This is a strict IFB local church/Bible based program (North Love Baptist), not one of those celebrity spa/resort rehabs.

Outside of noting his repentance and plan for rehabilitation, nothing more is our business save praying for him and his family.

This long term therapy is just manipulations on the service. Josh needs freedom. He needs to be set free, and only Christ can set Him free. He cannot set himself free, and no amount of effort on his part will do it.

We need to keep in mind, that none of us are better, or more righteous than he is.

And just curious, what destructive teachings went on in the house of David that corrupted Amnon?

Really? Amnon took a woman that was not his to take. I wonder where he learned that from?

That coupled with the first 6 sons of David had six different mothers. And David wasn't the best father in the bible.

Amnon was responsible for his own actions as was Josh Duggar. But to dismiss the unhealthy mindsets set before people as children only perpetuates things.

Hence.....my OP's question. What can the church do to keep these things from happening more and more?

Thank you. I'm sick of knowing so many details about their business. Are they trying to stay in the spotlight?

Hey, you finally hit on what most of us feel about your racial rants! Sometimes you can be totally hypocritical!

This is a great thread and an even better question, and more importantly it is a problem the church must deal with! The truth is, there are a lot more perverts sitting in the pews than anyone is willing to admit! And the church fails to approach the subject. I see nothing wrong with discussing this issue! Sorry you don't feel the same?! :flower:

I have a difficult time with the Duggar's. On the one hand they have embraced the fame that comes with celebrity. They certainly do not hide from it, and they are not donating their time. On the other hand they want privacy for their family. When you are in the public spotlight it is hard to have both. I certainly hope Josh Duggar truly repents and that his marriage can be saved. But look at how the media is having a field day with this story. Most of us have committed vile sins at one point in our lives. Would we want them paraded for all to see?

Some people on this board act like these Duggar folks are BB members and personal friends.

    Sad, really

We can't. The reason is there is no longer a sense of responsibility to the church there once was. We no longer have church families we have a bunch of people who happen to decide to come to church at the same time and same place. There is no longer a sense of accountability to the church. This is why church discipline has gone by the way side.

I am concerned that the church has abandoned the family. As a pastor I am working to change that in my church. We need strong families and our ministries need to be focused on strengthening them. When our families are weak our church will be weak also. The same could be said of our communities and so on.

Protection comes from accountability. Accountability is now seen these days as mistrust, intrusive, offensive etc. When we have no accountability we are free to fail. We should want accountability in our lives for our own protections. The church or pastors need to be putting time into the heads of households, the spiritual leaders of the homes and empowering them to take responsibility for their homes.

In the case of the Duggars their family grew so large it was difficult top manage by just two parents. They had their hands more than full and it was not necessary.

I am not certain what "destructive teachings" you are referring, but I can say that no home has perfect construct. Each member must come to terms with their own path and the consequences related to who they serve.

It is not the church's responsibility to protect the family. It is the family relationship that is first in line.

The family is to provide the nurture and the home is to be an example to the world of the relationship of Christ to the church.

Do all members of the church abide without stain and without finding their path has been a detour from righteousness?

The church is a reflection of the homes which make up the church membership.

Too often, the family desires to abdicate to the church the responsibility.

Here is an area of concern that hasn't been considered.

How much responsibility does the church place upon folks who engage in public activities and their private conduct? What role is the church or authority of the church over such matters?

For instance: Does a church who has a member that is engaged in professional sports have the authority to monitor the way and manner of the upbringing of that professional's children?

I wondered about this, this could be key to providing suggestions. Scarlett, are you privy to something you could tell us that would fill in the blank?

They've been discussed on and off in the five years I've been here, and I agree, some take them a bit too seriously and have put them up on a pedestal.
