According to your last post that's exactly what you want to do: they can pull themselves up by their bootstraps. After all, you've done it so they all can, can't they?

Matt, my mother at 38 yo was faced with a dead husband, a cerebral palsy daughter, two younger kids. She couldn’t work because my sister required round the clock attention, my brother and I were a burden I’m certain. Still she made a decision to live off Social security and rejected Welfare. Those were lean years. My Grandmom sent over food, when she could, my young uncle contributed some, I cut grass and shoveled snow. Mom would look after the neighbors kids when she worked. We had a mortgage, not like we have today but she payed it off. She also worked part time at a retail shop.... my point is we all pulled together as a family, we worked and thus survived.

I’m not a Scrooge but I believe that if you are able bodied, you should work. A person unable to work should receive a stipend to live, but be careful to not shame them, try hard to keep their dignity in tact.

Social Security =welfare over here. What's the difference on your side?

[ETA: I see far more of an affront to dignity in having to resort to food banks than being in receipt of benefits.

Also, what if you are able bodied but there are no jobs eg: in a time of high unemployment when there are too many workers but too few jobs?]

In truth there are many who can pull themselves together and contribute... and there are some who cannot and they require help .... then there are some that do take advantage... these folks I have a problem with. If they are young enough and physically able, induct them into military service... if older and lazy, there is always menial tasks.

You pay into SS thru paycheck. Welfare is a handout.

Social Security is an involuntary socialist insurance program. Most workers have no choice but to contribute, so if they live and work to the required age for full benefits, you can say they've earned those benefits. The disability part is more involuntary insurance, and seems to be quite abusive. It's commonly said that it's very difficult to get SS disability benefits, but there are people who receive them who are much less disabled than many seen working... Including my own case-- a good friend of mine is on SS disability, but there's no question I'm more handicapped than he, and I work full time. Welfare is a reward for sloth.

If the Social Security system is as good as our governmental masters tell us, then it should be made voluntary - then we would see how many people would actually sign up. (I know I wouldn't have).

Please tell me how the Republicans, or Conservatives, or Constitutionalists were responsible for the Roe v Wade decision? That was a law forced on the nation by liberal Supreme Court jurists who made up a right to kill human babies in the womb out of whole cloth. The aforementioned political groups had nothing to do with it.

No, in too many cases I do not. As for having luck, I did not "get lucky" as you seem to think. I have worked hard my whole life, first by serving in the USAF (I was a volunteer) and then getting out and becoming a laborer cleaning oil tanks and sewage treatment plants(Ugh!) After doing that I decided to make my work life better so I got some training to drive an 18 wheeler big truck and got my license. Through the years I have spent countless weeks away from home, including many holidays making a living to provide for my family - no one gave me anything.

In my industry there are people from all walks of life, the whole spectrum of society from native born Americans to recent immigrants to single women who have taken it upon themselves to learn to drive the big rigs and have a successful career. No, not luck for any of us, just a desire to make our lives better and willing to do the work to make it all happen. We did it, and the guy standing on the corner with a sign saying he is homeless and hungry can do it. My industry needs 100,000 drivers right now, all that is needed is a desire to work.

The British Labour Party is like Bernie Sanders in political philosophy. They want to give welfare, which is a narcotic and a subtle destroyer of the human spirit, to bone-idle people. The Protestant work ethic is that if you don't work you don't eat. Living on the dole has destroyed so many people.

Perhaps Theresa May will pass tax cuts....

Europe has so many enemies that strong defences and strong economies are necessary. Every man must do his duty.

Again, what if you can’t work... would it had been cheaper to have put my sister in a state home, my brother and I up for adoption and then have her go to work? Would that have been the solution your suggesting?

Then Paul Ryan needs to pay back the government for the years he and his family were on the dole.

So do you actually stop and talk to the guys standing on the corner or using the foodbank? I do: many of the homeless guys have mental health issues thanks in part to being failed by an underfunded (which is why we need to pay more tax not less, even the Conservatives are finally waking up and smelling that coffee) and understaffed (which is why we need more young immigrants, Carpro and Church Mouse Guy, not fewer) healthcare system which means no one will give them a job; the mums we see using food banks are in work but can't afford the costs of childcare when they go out to work; often at least one of the children has special educational needs like autism spectrum disorders.

That's part of what I mean by 'luck': the hand that you're dealt in life, and it's egregious to equate that with being work shy

Here is what we did....pasta is cheap. We lived on that and occasionally had ground meat / aka meat balls added in for protean. Heat at night was army blankets to conserve oil. Yes we did occasionally get the occasional Velvita cheese stick the government handed out I will admit and grandma tried to help with handouts. I distinctly remember cuponds... mom wouldn’t buy an item without it being on sale and her having a coupon. Day old bread that was marked down at the supermarket, an after school job for little money but a job none the less. We lived simply, frugally but we lived together as a family nonetheless. Guess today you would call that austerity.

Oh I’m forgetting my vegetable garden... it supplied tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and zucchini. God was good.

Call me cmg if it's okay with you. I guess your little island nation wants cheap workers. Labour needs to dump Corbyn--he's like Maxine Waters only not as pretty. The reason that Labour wants more immigrants to the jammed little island is because immigrants vote Labour to put all their wives and children on welfare. Really, Germany must be Labour's notion of Heaven.

Labour should tell the bone-idle Muslims that man does not live by bread alone.
