A literal interpretation of those Scriptures requires painting God as the inciter of murder and genocide, which is both blasphemous and inconsistent with the NT. Hence the requirement to read the OT through the lens of the New to avoid getting unstuck in that way.

 

The OT can stand on its own and be rightly understood without the NT.
