The Puritans used to mix fermented apple cider into their milk (killed germs) and give it to their children. In the US (at least some States) a child can be given alcohol by their parents without it being illegal.
When it comes to drug use, the negative reaction is usually cultural. Caffeine is a highly addictive drug, but Christians don't think twice about drinking a couple mugs. Over the counter medicine is not frowned upon. My tea totaling parents would give me a shot of NyQuil without hesitation when I was a kid. It was 20% alcohol. It was like giving a child a shot of Jack Daniels and saying "go to sleep."
I have made my point earlier. In the US we tend to have a legalistic Christianity that is less about grace and more about hoping the good works outweigh the bad works.

 

The sons of Aaron were forbidden to drink wine before they went into the tabernacle Leviticus 10:9.

Anyone taking the Nazerite vow was forbidden to drink wine ior strong drink, but for anyone who thinks it is then OK to drink grape juice, read Numbers 6:1-4 , all of it.

6 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD: 3 He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

4 All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk.

 

Yet, they weren't forbidden to drink wine or get drunk.

And if you take a Nazarite vow, I guess this pertains to you.

 

David Kent, I read the entire chapter, can you help me understand something? As you said, the Nazirite stops consuming wine AND grape juice, but at the end of the passage there is a ceremony that just removes the prohibition on wine. (v. 20 "...and after that the Nazarite may drink wine.")
So the wine abstention is lifted, but the juice abstention continues/is permanent? Am I reading that right?

He is definitely not sinning by drinking, but the hiding of it is actually being deceptive.

I cook quite often with beer. Mickey's malt liquor is my preference. The alcohol cooks out. I really dont care who sees me buy it.

 

I drink, very lightly. The beer I typically buy is very sweet and only has about a 3% alcohol content. Not even enough to give me a buzz. I just like it for the taste.
However, my mother is very against alcohol. I'm 26, so I don't have any obligation to 'obey' her in that area, but I do keep my alcohol out of the house for her. I keep my stash at a friend's house, sometimes have one when I'm eating lunch over there.

 

Yuengling is 3.3% and I got tore up from the floor up on it a few times, back in the day.

 

There was this lady at my workplace. Very short (shorter than me), looked maybe 15 and most people thought she was a teenage boy. When I first saw her, she came through my lane with some alcyhol, and I was like ????? When she pulls out her ID I'm even more ?????
But she was over 21. And, she went on to be one of my supervisors after that. Until she quit.

 

Personal choice to not give the appearance of evil. "Each, according to the dictates of one's conscience."

 

There's no hard and fast rule that says, "thou shalt not drink alcohol". But even if it's permitted, it still might not be wise.

 

My problem is hiding it to avoid the appearance of evil is an active act of deceit.
