Raffles held by a local church to raise money for a project.(Assume the project is a very worthy, noble cause)
    Right?
    Wrong?
Not technically sin but looks bad?

1 Corinthians 16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

there is nothing biblically against it. If people don't like it then they should stay away from it but doing so cannot be supported by scripture.

You wouldn't consider it a form of gambling or a game of chance?

    This is just my opinion.

I don't like these things in church and my church doesn't do them. HOWEVER, if it is in the church and everyone knows the money is going to a godly project - to me that's not really gambling.

I just think there are far better ways of raising money.

I don't have a problem with them. I don't have a problem with gambling in and of itself. There isn't any prohibition to it biblically. If one is going to do it in an atmosphere like a gambling hall then I would say why would a Christian want to do that. Spending money you don't have because of hopes of getting a needed provision in your life that fails to rely on God is an issue. Playing the lottery because you are entertained by it but do not do so as a means of provision is not wrong necessarily. Raffles that go to the church can be helpful. There is no prohibition to raise funds outside of the regular tithes and offerings in scripture.

A raffle for what?... You don't need a raffle, open your wallet or purse... Brother Glen:)

1 John 3: 17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

We had a raffle for a rifle (actually a Benelli shotgun). But you didn't pay into the raffle. So it wasn't a real raffle. But it was a real rifle....shotgun, that is.

Do you consider selecting a CD or mutual fund in which to deposit reserve funds gambling or chance?

Hypothetically ( I won't say my church, wouldn't want to do that ) A church raffles off six moderate priced guns in one drawing. This church sells tickets all over three or four counties. They have the drawing in a circus like atmosphere in the sanctuary. It is beginning to not set right with me.

The best way is to be more social about it.

Do a large spit roast but charge $50-$60 per plate. Roast Potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, you can get bulk bags of it real cheap.

I would say it is a sin. You gamble because you covet some money without working for it.
