Endless proof texting was not the point

I really don't understand why, on a board such as Baptist Board, there are people opposed to the use of Bible verses in discussions. Seems like some folks want to hear mere human opinions instead of the Word of God.

Using Bible verses is good but if we are quoting the same passage and holding it as true and yet coming up with different interpretations of what it means - well that will require thinking and further discussion.

Well, as the old saying goes, "God said it. That settles it."

Do you not see them claiming your stance as unscriptural?

Unless God gives one ears to hear and eyes to see, then he cannot understand the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

I’m not disputing that man has accountability for choices but the field apparently is not established if God is a god of papa Gepeto. Is this a God of fate, one that creates everything that happens in the world, or perhaps he is a Free Will God who lays down law and then punishes you for breaking that law? Either way I don’t perceive either to be very forgiving and merciful.

Let me ask you bluntly, do you believe in Original Sin?

Depends, "original sin" who's are you referring to, Eve, Adam, Satan or what? And how you understand what that term means.

I know what the bible says regarding sin but the term is not found in the bible so it is something that has to be imported by man.

It is a term that has greatly misused so the question is what does it mean to you and then I can say whether I agree with your view.

That the Sins of Adam are imputed to the sons.

I’m exiting this discussion however I do recall Someone telling me that the Recording Angel will not accept the excusethat others made me what I am, and that I’m blameless for the final outcome.

In any case, one can (as some ppl have) use misfortune, bad times, etc., to educate and elevate themselves… evidenced by my ancestors who fled poverty to build better lives in America, always educating & elevating themselves. I view this as being the creatures choice granted by God in order to live and grow. And if I believe in any Deity, I would thank and bless Him for this liberty of choice, otherwise we would be slaves to the devil contributing to untold evil. And I refuse to believe that those are the planned intentions of a sovereign God.

So for the calvinist the question is always. Am I truly saved? Am I one of the elect? Even your faith is not your own, it had to be given to you. So what security do you really have?
There is some truth in this. I think it was MacArthur who said that if you can read Edward's works on holy affections and come out still thinking you are a Christian you are doing very well. Owen spent much time teaching on examining yourself and avoiding apostacy and shipwreck. I have a book "Still Sovereign" which is from a Calvinist perspective but more modern and they joke that a non-Calvinist is worried whether they are saved or not and a Calvinist worries whether they are elect.

The thing is, the Calvinist literature that wants you to examine yourself definitely is expecting you to do something about it no matter how much the official teaching is that salvation is "all of God". There are "conditions" for salvation yet scripture does not seem to indicate that God provides the means then sits back passively to await whatever we do in response.

I find it funny that almost all strict Calvinists who put everything on election seem to think that they, by the way, are elect. The only exception I know of was William Cowper, whose story is so sad that it will just about make you cry.

Okay. I've heard of that movie or TV show, whichever it is, but that's about all.
Ah Ken, as I age I’m starting to look like that myself. LOL Bald, glasses, gray hair and beard ( cause I can’t be bothered to shave every day ). What you don’t see is my sweatpants & cane… I’m even thinking about buying Velcro sneakers. Ahhh age! ;)
