That was my rifle of choice. I had several but that was the one I used most often. Would not call it a plinking rifle.
Here in Alberta you want something with good stopping power as we have grizzly bears to contend with.

He was a young radical that went to far and now will pay the price.
I lost my father at a young age and so I feel sorry for the wife and kids.

You guys know what the dangers are of not being careful of what you post online. Here is a partial list of the fallout happening in the US to hateful people who rejoiced over Charlie's death. (As liberal as MSNBC is they even fired one!)

  • Hospital Staffer, Virginia anesthesiologist, social media post; fired.
  • BLM activist Tyler Wilson went to a Kirk vigil, shouted profanity—had firearm and marijuana, arrested.
  • MSNBC commentator Matthew Dowd fired for suggesting Kirk brought about his own killing.
  • Rep. Ilhan Omar profanity filled mocking of Kirk’s assassination.
  • George Washington University admin calls Kirk assassination “fair” due to stance on guns.
  • NFL’s Carolina Panther employee fired for saying the killing was “fair.”
  • U. of Mississippi staff member fired for making insensitive remarks on social media then saying “no thoughts no prayers.”
  • MTSU assistant dean fired after saying she has “zero sympathy for Kirk.”
  • Office Depot worker fired for refusing to print posters, “political propaganda” for a vigil honoring Kirk.
  • Cincinnati restaurant Lucius Q severed ties with co-owner Aaron Sharpe after he responded to a FB post asking prayers, “Good riddance.”
  • Secret Service agent Anthony Pough posted on Facebook that Kirk “spewed hate and racism.” He was suspended.
  • Two American Airlines pilots were suspended for online remarks celebrating the assassination.
  • Delta Airlines suspended multiple employees for social media posts celebrating Kirk’s death.
  • A nurse turned in a doctor for celebrating Kirk’s death, and she and he were both suspended while the investigation takes place.
  • New York teacher wrote on Facebook, “Good riddance to bad garbage” and was placed on leave and is being investigated.

I hunted with a .243 for whitetail and mule deer

I grew up immersed in firearms, had a Remington Model 700 .243 as a young teenager, used a Lee Hand Loader to reload with until my cartridges stretched so much the rounds wouldn't chamber (didn't have the tool to trim with). Weren't any deer where we lived then but they're thick where we live now, the wife and I have taken many deer over the years with bow, .50 cal muzzle loaders, and SKS. I let the .243 get away, regretfully, as I have several other guns.

Mom used to say that if you can’t say anything good about someone then don’t say anything.

I’d add, if you have nothing beautiful to say, then be silent.

My heart goes out to Charlie’s family

No real woodlands in NJ remain today due to so much urban sprawl (damn NY’ers) so you can hunt with a bow and/or a shotgun but no rifles allowed. If you want to do that you go to PA or upstate NY. Getting a hand gun is impossible. Even traveling in the subway trains was an adventure… you pull a gun there and they will clink you up in Rikers and throw away the key.

Over the years I had had several rifles from a 303, 243, 270, 30.06, up to a 300 Win Mag for the bears out here. But they are all gone now due to age and a bad heart.

I started out with the 303 as a kid back on the east coast.

I liked the 30.06 as it would reach out a touch prairie antelope, my 243 was for the scrub brush white tails and muley's, Liked the 300 for elk and big horn sheep plus it was nice to have when in bear country.

Never had a shotgun w/sights until late. Do now, Chinese military one I picked up at a bargain, need it like I need a hole in the head. Besides, shotguns, to me, were for birds, squirrels, and cottontails.

Ask @Silverhair about that one.

I would have to say that if he dropped a griz with a single slug the barrel would have to of been in the bears mouth. A shotgun just does not have the power to take down a bear unless you are real close and really really lucky.

As far as I’m concerned, if an intruder breaks into my house, a pump scatter gun with buckshot is a great deterrent although it makes a mess. My wife can point & shoot without really aiming so she has a degree of proficiency. The key here is to not let the intruder outa the house alive and using one scares the crap outa anyone barging in unannounced. The sliding sound alone is a deterrent.

Anyway there are no grizz in New Jersey….lots of drug addicts (very dangerous when driving under the influence) but no grizz to prepare for.

Pine barrens have some sizable undeveloped areas, though it's being nibbled away. If there was a repeat of April 1963 (200k acres burned, mostly on 4/20) there would be fatalities.
Where I lived in NNJ was abutted by the watershed for the neighbor town's reservoir. We could walk north from our place for about 3,000 feet before encountering houses - still a half mile unless there's development hidden from Google earth. My (unsuccessful) NNJ deer hunting came 1956-70, and at that time a rifled slug was called "the $100 shell", as that was supposedly the fine for being caught with one. Buckshot only for the firearms season for deer.
