Protestants who condemn any public display of spirituality, like crossing yourself, ash crosses on forehead, or wearing cross necklaces — they typically applaud football players and coaches who kneel and pray publicly on the football field at the end of a game.

They also may wear tee shirts or ball caps displaying Christian messages.

God looks at the heart. Are we publicly displaying Christian symbols and messages in a pompous, self righteous, prideful manner? Or are we expressing our faith in order to stand out from the atheist, worldly crowd, and hoping to draw others to the faith?

Spot on!

Why did John the Baptist call for public repentance.?
He didn't. John the Baptist's ministry was restricted to the Jewish people. He publically (if we consider that specific audience to be the public) called for the people to repent.

I think you mean confessing of sins. But here it is confessing sins to other members of the congregation ("to one another").

We publically confess Christ.

I do not have a problem with such symbols as ash on the forehead...many wear crosses for the same reason, or a fish sticker on their car, so I see no room for them to complain.

Just because something is not biblical (like such symbols) does not mean it is wrong. It seems to me that God allows for personal expressions of our faith.

Marking thau on the forehead is biblical as as a sign of repentance and separation from sin.

Your ignorance (as most rc's) of God's Word is astounding. It's really not that hard: Why do rc's ignore Christ's Words?

Matthew 6:16-18

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

So again: Why do those in the rc denomination have ashes put on their foreheads for ash Wednesday so others may know that they are 'holy' rc's and are beginning their fasting for the 40 days of lent?
Maybe some do but others do it as a reminder that physical death is inevitable so pay attention to your soul.

I still occasionally cross myself as a recognition of the Holy Trinity in honor of them.. Father, Son , Holy Spirit. That is truly an outward sign of an inward spirit conviction.

You need a sign to remind you that you are a sinner and in need a
of repentance? That is common knowledge for born-again Christians.

Why are those with the ashes on their foreheads making a public repentance for?

What is the purpose of doing it publicly?
What is it are you so? Are you saying that these people, from the RCC are not saved because they do not conform to your sense of biblical integrity?

How are you travelling mate? I have been praying for you.

You accuse Catholics of being insincere in their repentance, that they are doing it all for show.
You sneer, judge and accuse as if you know and judge people’s hearts.
You profess to be Christian yet you use all the weapons of the darkness.

And I’m not seeing any charity in any of your posts, which is most disturbing.
That’s enough flailing at a brother… seek first understanding… albeit detestable to you and be humble as our lord was humble. Otherwise it might be you lacking a contrite heart. A good act of contrition might be here in order brother.. just saying.

It is as biblical as Baptists using hymnals (or putting lyrics on screens). It may not be wrong, but it is also not biblical.

Ezekiel 9:4 “And the Lord said to him: Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem: and mark Thau upon the foreheads of the men that sigh, and mourn for all the abominations that are committed in the midst thereof.”

Biblical and pertinent.
