Tricky Variant in Gal. 4:7... Need Help

The option I like is #5 "of God through Christ" (though why you added "[an heir]" in brackets to 5 and then normal in 6 but not 1-4 is a bit strange). I have a hard time seeing this getting reduced intentionally or accidentally to "through God". "Christ" would have to be omitted and "God"...

    God the Father

If life had an origin, then how can "it always existed"??? And saying "God is life" sounds a bit pantheistic to me. And how do you get God is spirit to God is Spirit and then to God is The Spirit of Life? That was assumed and not very clear. What is your goal with this thread? Seems somewhat...

Syntax of 1 John 5:1 as a proof for monergism

Yes and no. I believe God uses the medium of language to communicate truth. Otherwise, charismatic tongues/gibberish could rightly be called a valid form for God to communicate so long as the people are depending on the Spirit to receive whatever it is they are to receive. Bible translations...

Syntax of 1 John 5:1 as a proof for monergism

That is exactly the problem. They fall into the category of the "natural man" and so forth. But they can still make intelligible sense of the Bible. But the truths do not take root and affect (or even effect) their lives.

Syntax of 1 John 5:1 as a proof for monergism

Is that really what you believe about illumination? I know many scholarly critics that can intelligibly understand Scripture. But its truths have not taken root.

Syntax of 1 John 5:1 as a proof for monergism

I'm not sure how I communicated this, but that was not my intent. Quite the opposite, that substantival participles are adjectival rather than adverbial. I've not heard from Dr. White, and I'm not entirely sure that I will. But I'll keep trying. I asked him to probe Wallace since he knows him...

Tricky Variant in Gal. 4:7... Need Help

To be honest, that explanation is simply not academically satisfying. I find it to be far weaker, although I favor the external support.

No one deserved to be saved. Let's try this again.

Psalm 111:9a, "He has sent redemption to His people."

At what Point was Saul (Paul) Regenerated?

OH! I see what you did there with "right". My fault. I retract. Shows my lack of exegesis skills too, I suppose. I deleted my post: reason given that I am a hypocritical @$$. Apology for the accusation when I was just as guilty of not understanding your humor.

I know... I was just having a bit of fun with the right reverend mwc.

    The Fall Of Man?

You raise good points. But I think there are some works of his you would like and encourage you. For example, his How God Became King is a great popular level work on the theology of the gospel accounts. I just downloaded a pdf version of Piper's book (free at his website). When I get a...

At what Point was Saul (Paul) Regenerated?

Logically after he had been born from God did he believe... 1 Jn 5:1

Tricky Variant in Gal. 4:7... Need Help

This is why I find internal arguments unhelpful and subjective. External data is far more objective, and I am conflicted on that. But I think it helps to be explain how one reading brought about the others. And it seems that the "through God" reading can easily and best explain the others. I'm...

    The Fall Of Man?

I found this while reading for something else. But I wanted to document it for you so you can see what scholars are saying. I highly recommend this book if you are wanting to read through the history of NT scholarship starting in the 1800s. Stephen Neill does an amazing job of making a topic...

"Where two or three are gathered in my name"

I think there is a terribly under emphasized grace in the aforementioned passage from the OP. Certainly the context is about church discipline and certainly at the point in question the discipline has escalated to the point of excommunication. And in that moment of despair and doubt, pain and...

Syntax of 1 John 5:1 as a proof for monergism

I'll let you know when White responds... if he responds. Maybe I can hound him on facebook. :D I acknowledge Machen's quote, though it is a bit dated. Plus, as a beginning grammar, he may be stating a general truth for simplicity sake. Aren't first year grammars notorious for this? But I'll...

Syntax of 1 John 5:1 as a proof for monergism

John, you've written research papers before. You can assume I have as well. When you quote somebody and use squared brackets [like these], then what is in between is not quotation. This is common knowledge. I already acknowledged that this was not as solid ground as I was hoping. I actually...

Syntax of 1 John 5:1 as a proof for monergism

So John asked for some Grammar to back up the claim that the participle doesn't have to be contemporaneous with the verb. In truth, I wasn't reading through Wallace, but I heard Dr. White quote this section, and so I tracked it down. So here we go. I'm curious to your thoughts on this JoJ...
