35.5 mpg- what a crock!!

I foresee nothing but economic disaster ahead. Forget owning any RV's, boats, or anything on a trailer.

In 10 years we will all be driving cars made from aluminum foil with lawn-mower engines in them.

Strike that- YOU might be. I'm going to keep on driving my truck, sports car, and van--- until "THEY" pass a law that outlaws them, too! (Or I can't get parts on the 'black market' any more. Yes, it's probably going to come to that.)

Obama- the WORST president EVER- and it hasn't been 6 months yet. I hoped for the best, but... :tear:

Change you wanted- change is all you're going to have left.

I'm guessing that the 35.5mpg will be obtained by going hybrid - gas/electric.

When that happens no doubt we will see our electric bills go through the roof and will also start to experience brown outs and black outs.

I understand that's for cars - not for other vehicles. They said something on the news today about light trucks needing to get something like 27 mpg so it sounds like heavy trucks and SUVs are not included?

Fact of the matter is, CAFE is a "shell game".

From the CAFE website-

What is CAFE? Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) is the sales weighted average fuel economy, expressed in miles per gallon (mpg), of a manufacturer’s fleet of passenger cars or light trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 8,500 lbs. or less, manufactured for sale in the United States, for any given model year. Fuel economy is defined as the average mileage traveled by an automobile per gallon of gasoline (or equivalent amount of other fuel) consumed as measured in accordance with the testing and evaluation protocol set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

It's just another scheme to make more money for the government under the guise of "energy independence" or "the environment".

Yes, 1000 pound cars fighting for space on the highway with 240+million cars and trucks weighing 2 tons and up. As much as the democrat/socialists dislike America and wish it to be like those countries in Europe it is not.

So where is the electricity to come from. obama opposes nuclear and drilling for American oil so that leaves coal.

The 35.5 is only for cars and small trucks...

And according to an article I just read, the automakers will raise the prices of SUVs and bigger vehicles to offset the price increase for the small cars...

IOWS.. those of us in rural farm areas that depend on trucks will once again be stuck with the cost so that snot nosed little rich men can drive their small cars cheaper.

How it will hit consumers. In order to pay for this sort of strategy, automakers would have to raise prices of large vehicles, something that will penalize America's rural families said Randall Filer, a professor of economics at New York City's Hunter College who studies the auto industry.
"In effect what you do is penalize rural families and large families and use the increase in price those families to subsidize city dwellers and rich families that tend to use smaller cars," he said.
Higher truck prices are also going to keep families in their old vehicles longer.
"One thing we do know is, as long as you increase the severity of the standard and, particularly, as you increase the price of pick-ups and SUVs, that makes owners hold onto them longer," he said.

all this can possibly do is cost more then we can pay, then where will we be, no way to work or store or church.

And all this time, I thought our economy and governmental system was based on the "free market."

My bad.

You'd think Obama would be smart enough to figure things out. When gas was $4.75 per gallon, they couldn't sell Honda Fits or Nissan Versas fast enough. When gas is cheap, people drive cars that are actually comfortable and ride well.

But...we are talking about someone whose approach to government has been textbook fascism, so I shouldn't be surprised...

This is another bone-headed move by the Obama administration. During this economic down-turn to add to the cost of owning and operating a motor vehicle is not very smart. It puts an undue burden on the working class. Add to that the increase in taxes we will all be seeing and this is just another move to destroy the middle-class.

What about large families? They are going to be on the losing end of this. What this ultimately sounds like is that the government is trying to eliminate choices that we can make. Its a known fact that SUV's sell better than those teenie, tiny fuel efficient cars. Its not like Chysler & GM are in a position to protest it either because they are now run by the federal government.

I'd love to see Obama have to ride in a Presidential limo that gets 35.5 MPG.

It's beginning to look more and more like 'Animal Farm' every day. EDIT: Maybe that should be "Obamainal Farm".

my 1997 saturn sl gets 40 on the road.

When you keep upping horsepower, something has to give.

The mid-90's Geo Metro got Prius-like numbers. But its 0-60 time was 2.7 days.

You can have fantastic mileage, or more power. Not both.
