A Resolution Condemning White Supremacy Causes Chaos at the Southern Baptist Convention

I did not want this discussion restricted only to Baptists, so I put it here.

I am glad to have read the Convention passed the resolution condemning White Supremacy and the Alt. Right.

Please read the entire article.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Leaders from the Southern Baptist Convention were divided over a resolution affirming the denomination’s opposition to white supremacy and the alt-right during their annual meeting in Phoenix this week. On Tuesday, they initially declined to consider the proposal submitted by a prominent black pastor in Texas, Dwight McKissic, and only changed course after a significant backlash. The drama over the resolution revealed deep tension lines within a denomination that was explicitly founded to support slavery.

A few weeks before the meeting was slated to start, McKissic published his draft resolution on a popular Southern Baptist blog called SBC Voices. The language was strong and pointed.

It affirmed that “there has arisen in the United States a growing menace to political order and justice that seeks to reignite social animosities, reverse improvements in race relations, divide our people, and foment hatred, classism, and ethnic cleansing.” It identified this “toxic menace” as white nationalism and the alt-right, and urged the denomination to oppose its “totalitarian impulses, xenophobic biases, and bigoted ideologies that infect the minds and actions of its violent disciples.” It claimed that the origin of white supremacy in Christian communities is a once-popular theory known as the “curse of Ham,” which taught that “God through Noah ordained descendants of Africa to be subservient to Anglos” and was used as justification for slavery and segregation. The resolution called on the denomination to denounce nationalism and “reject the retrograde ideologies, xenophobic biases, and racial bigotries of the so-called ‘alt-right’ that seek to subvert our government, destabilize society, and infect our political system.”

It's easy to see why this resolution was controversial. I wouldn't vote for it either. Whereas, it the wording is laced with high sounding ideals, the proponent's true colors are revealed in the last sentence. Denounce nationalism? That is a fairly direct condemnation of our President's "America First" platform. This is nothing but an anti Trump resolution, cloaked in racial verbiage that is about as real as Russian collusion and the Easter bunny. I am seriously disappointed that it passed.

I'm glad to see they put this line down in the sand. It is important to remember that we are a Christian first and our ethnicity and nationality must take a back seat to our Faith in Christ.

27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slaveg nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. Gal 3:27-29

11Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,e free; but Christ is all, and in all.

12Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Col 3:11-13

Its anti Trump garbage. One more reason I hope our church leaves the SBC.

Yeah. It is beyond left-wing to decry every form of racism. We need to get back to our roots.

The only nationalism mentioned in the resolution is white nationalism. No mention of welfare cuts.

But the truth is the that the Southern Baptist Convention was a lot better when it kept those "other people" in their places.

First of all I new this would be posted on here and I knew who would post. I am here in Phoenix right now as I type this post having been at the convention this week. The original resolution as written was completely rejected by the resolutions committee because the language was deemed inflammatory and the term "alt-right" was too vague. This was the description of the chairman of the resolutions committee during the meeting.

After some discussion Steve Gains the president called for a vote to allow further discussion on it. It required a 2/3 vote and it did not pass. As a result Steve Gaines talked to the resolutions committee about rewriting the resolution to clearly define "alt-right" and remove the inflammatory language. When that was completed, this afternoon, it was then voted on and passed almost unanimously. The term "alt-right" is clearly defined as "white supremacists".

I was pleased to vote on the final resolution but refused to vote on the original. The original resolution was
sophomoric, inflammatory, and worded out of emotion rather than reason. Steve Gains and the resolution committee and led this situation with great honor, and in the Spirit of the Lord unlike those who were pushing for the original resolution.

BTW: The resolution differs in many places from McKissic's original.

Southern Baptist Convention > On The Anti-Gospel Of Alt-Right White Supremacy
Thanks for this. It is sad that the SBC needs to make these kinds of statements at all but unfortunately it is still a real problem. This final draft appears reasonable. I didn't read the original. Good to hear from RevMitch that it passed.

I'm surprised that the confederate flag issue got passed last year as highlighted in this resolution. I would imagine the disagreement would have been greater than this resolution. Were you there for that one Revmitchell?

Who are "these other people"?

And what is their place?
