I know I'm quite late coming to this party, but RevMitchell, you hit the nail squarely on the head.

...with the good reverend .... not every problem is spiritual, not to say that sometimes spiritual issues and emotional issues feed into physical illness!

Like Rev, said, God gave us doctors [to diagnose and treat us], and scientists to develop, test and market the medications the docs use!

There is NO disgrace in having a doctor and using medication, and anyone who begs to differ needs to remember that sometimes those who don't accept things are put in a place to better understand those things, by experiencing it themselves or by someone very close to them!

I learned this lesson the hard war, on divorce, chronic pain, back injuries and depression and panic attacks. I adamantly preached against such problems saying they indicated a spiritual defect in the affected person. Then, one by one, I came to face each, and I know now that what came from my mouth must have hurt many people in my early years as a preacher!

I learned, and I only pray God did n't allow my ignorance to drive someone from the church and back into the arms of evil!

That was a walk-off homer run, with bases loaded, bottom of the ninth, and your team trailed by three! Good words!

Recently the British Columbia statistics put the number of people infected with measles at over 350. That is an epidemic. They also point the finger at "the anti-vaccination" fad. There is no reason for it.
Ten days ago, a plane left from B.C. and landed here (the next province over). Unfortunately one of its passengers had measles. Now there are two (and counting). Why? Because there was a time when parents, out of their own ignorance, decided not to vaccinate their children.

Let's look at another example with far greater and reaching consequences.
In Pakistan the Taliban has been refusing the UN's help in a vaccination program to vaccinate all children against Polio. They are teaching their children that it is an "American poison," deliberately made to kill their children. The reasoning sounds the same as another post I read here.

So intent are they on refusing this vaccination that they have shot and killed some UN peace-keeping aid workers.

In the past year or so, the Taliban have increased efforts to stop the administration of the vaccine, assassinating 30 health workers and policemen who were guarding vaccination teams in KP and Karachi since December 2012.

What has been the result in Pakistan itself?

Because of the TTP's fierce opposition to the OPV, Pakistan is one of only three countries where polio is still endemic. The other two countries are Nigeria (with 51 reported cases this year) and Afghanistan (9). Pakistan has reported 62 cases this year, already surpassing the total for all of 2012.

Now we live in a small world. Not only are the Taliban killing off their own children by not vaccinating them. This is genocide by refusal of vaccination. They are also attacking other nations in the same way. Soon they will come to you if you have not been vaccinated. IOW, people travel. This is a virulent strain of Polio much stronger than the one that you and I were vaccinated for many years ago. Because of travel it has spread to other nations.

My wife, nor kids have ever been to a doctor, had shots, etc.
They are rarely sick.
One got the measles.
She got well.

We have had no medical bills.

I'll take our lifestyle of faith in the Creator, rather than to suffer many things at the hands of physicians.

....but I also respect the right of parents to deny them should that be their choice!

I know that immunizations get a bad rap, and maybe someof what is said is true. BUT, the one thing I know about immunizations is this, they only protect the immunized against the unimmunized should this group come down with the public affliction the immunization is intended to stop from spreading.

So, don't immunize your kids if you feel that strongly ... just be ready to accept the responsiblity of their health should something break out, and that immunization could have prevented your child from getting ill!

I am reminded of a lady in a Church of which I was a member. We had a member who had fought ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease for several years and was in its final stages. She told him: "If you had enough faith you could get up out of that chair and walk!" A few years later that woman was using a walker; so be careful what you say! Remember Jimmy Swaggert!

I asked on the basis of the child possessed with a demon on the foot of the mount of transfiguration. The disciples were unable to cast out the demon. Jesus rebuked them for their lack of faith, and then proceeded to cast the demon out and heal the child.
The question is therefore: Are all epileptics demon-possessed?
I know a pastor today that believes that, based on that passage. Is he right?

Or would you advise such a person to go to a doctor who would prescribe for him the proper medication to control seizures, that is anti-convulsant drugs (not drinking urine). :smilewinkgrin:

There are varying opinions on the flu shot. I think the jury is still out.
I have never had a flu shot and I have never had the flu. But I have a strong immune system. As for those immunizations that, without them, one could end up dead or very sick I am up to date. I am a missionary and travel to some nations that most people would never think of going.

Some apparently have but I have taken flu shots for the last 20 years and have not had the flu. Starting in 1960 I took a flu shot for several years and never had the flu.

But!

In February 1995 I had a heart attack. My wife drove me to the hospital. i went into cardiac arrest. the attending physician brought me out. A cardiologist ran a wire through the femoral artery to my heart and broke the clot. I am alive today. I thank God for giving me life and providing an emergency room doctor and a cardiologist at the hospital able to do what they are trained to do.

Now you can brag about your health and your faith to your heart's content but if you ever have a heart attack I hope you can make it to the hospital in time. As for my faith there are times when I am like the father of the demon possessed boy in DHK's post: Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief. {Mark 9:24}

The visa application I fill out does not require me to have any shots whatsoever. I took them on my doctor's advice, and on the advice of a government travel advisory for that particular nation. No one forced me to take any shots. It was entirely my choice to do so.

Mine requires me not to.

That is not true. That is like saying that the faith of that snake handler who recently died of deadly bite, required him to handle deadly snakes. Obviously he was wrong. But he did say something very similar if not exactly the same: "My faith requires me to handle snakes."
"No, it does not!" There is no scriptural evidence for that.

They might respect a person who uses their brains and technology that they have developed over the years. If a man has a heart attack, what then? liver failure? kidney failure? and other ailments untreatable by "faith", what then?
There was a church in northern Indiana that didn't believe in going to doctors either. People started dying--children that could have been easily treated. This got out and then they started facing lawsuits. Not a good testimony is it?

Sometimes he does; sometimes he doesn't. There are many sicknesses that there are no vaccines for. The blind man was blind for 40 years. Why? That the glory of God might be made manifest. God never promised to keep all sickness away from anyone or everyone. But he does expect us to use our common sense.
