So - what do you make of calvinists going off to be missionaries Brian?

Anyway I'm going off to bed myself - and that voluntarily of my own free will (I think).

When Catholic says Good Works it means LOVE. The Commandments love God and Love neighbor.

So long as you insist a Faith that is devoid of Love we will never give it a passing grade.

Martin Luther argues that Faith is the principle point and the highest commandment that includes all other in itself.

Martin Luther also believes,Faith shall be the master over love, and love shall yield to it.

The Pharisees did not keep the Commandments had even traditions that override the command of God, and believed that merely because they were elect, they were saved.

We believe Jesus Christ who says keep the commandments. Matthew 19:16-17, Mark 10:17-22 Luke 18:18-22.

    John 3

36He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

    Matthew 19

16And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” 17And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

    Romans 2
13for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified.

    John 8
51“Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.”

    Romans 6
16Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

    Hebrews 5
9And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,

    James 2
21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

    1 Timothy 1
14and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.

    1 Timothy 4
16Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.

Continuing Extra-Biblical Revelation is more limited among Catholics than you suggest.

The following is from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

God has said everything in his Word
65 "In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son."26 Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father's one, perfect and unsurpassable Word. In him he has said everything; there will be no other word than this one. St. John of the Cross, among others, commented strikingly on Hebrews 1:1-2:

In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word - and he has no more to say. . . because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty.27

There will be no further Revelation
66 "The Christian economy, therefore, since it is the new and definitive Covenant, will never pass away; and no new public revelation is to be expected before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ."28 Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries.

67 Throughout the ages, there have been so-called "private" revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ's definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his saints to the Church.

Christian faith cannot accept "revelations" that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillment, as is the case in certain non-Christian religions and also in certain recent sects which base themselves on such "revelations".

Uh, that's what pastors, fellow Christians, and friends do.

Smart boy. Of course he does. We Calvinists share the gospel promiscuously.

I can tell you. First God commands us to proclaim the gospel. Second, God uses means, and the means He uses to call in His sheep is the proclamation of the gospel.

I am all for it, IF they are not doing it for the wrong reasons.

Many people foolishly believe, and are helped in this error by very bad teaching, such as David Platt's book, "Radical", that the pinnacle of love for God is missions work in a third-world country. I myself used to believe that foolish notion.

    Calvinists condemn arminians, and Calvinists.

So at least they are consistent

In my experience (50+ years) in my walk with the LORD there are many many flavors of calvinism.
It's kind of like dispensationalists - Heinz 57 Varieties (at least).

Not a criticism (this time) just a statement of fact. BB is ample evidence thereof.

Are you denying the spiritual gift of prophesy?

There is no longer a spiritual gift of prophesy. It, along with the others, passed away around the turn of the first century.

It is called Christian understanding, and illumination. It is what happens when you reject the cult started by a brain damaged woman and just believe the bible.

No, simply Christian. I do not get into all the different labels. Truth is truth. I learn , and investigate, dogmas, doctrines, interpretations, visitations, ex.... If there are no contradictions to the foundation of scripture I accept it as truth. Denominations are too quarrelsome and confusing. Christianity to me is not that complicated and there should not be division in doctrinal beliefs. Definitely not Christ's plan. The division He is about is separating the wheat from the weeds all this other nonsense is the devil's confusion.

To all of thee above, in which you were addressing, God has not rendered us defenseless and ignorant.
    1John4:1-6
    1 John 4
    Test the Spirits
4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

If one denies the Incarnation of Christ then the spirit of antichrist, is the spirit with him. Prophets are only necessary when there is grave sin. They are to bring people back to God. All should remain awake and walk in Christ. Test according to 1John 4. As to one speaking of future events that will come upon those who do not repent, it is a wait and see. Follow Christ and you do not have to be concerned for tomorrow, sufficient for the day are its own troubles. As for biblical prophecy it obviously is true.
    ACTS 2:16-18
Prophecy is a spiritual gift. It is poured out upon the Elect.

    Peter Preaches to the Crowd
…16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17‘- In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people; your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18Even on My servants, both men and women, I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.…

The Spirit of prophecy is the Spirit of Christ, "I know mine and mine know Me". If a prophet does not deny the (Incarnation) Jesus Christ come in the flesh as John said -then they are of the Spirit of God. And this confessing is also in scripture. It was confessed by the Archangel Gabriel and by Elisabeth at the inception of Christianity. God is good and He does not leave His children ignorant. For lack of knowledge His people parish not lack of scripture. Read it diligently, pray , "Ask and you shall receive" and God reveals. All we need, to test denominational doctrine and prophets is at our fingertips in scripture.

Is it the job of Calvinism to squash the gifts of the spirit?

Yet there are multiple examples found in scripture giving instruction to those with the spiritual gift of prophesy. Why would those instructions be given if it would no longer exist?

Can you show me one example in scripture that specifically states that the gift of prophesy no longer exists or will cease to exist?

What exactly is your understanding of prophesy? How would you define it? From my understanding it's simply speaking on behalf of God. Prophets were not fortune tellers, they were simply messengers relaying a message that God gave them. I am charismatic because I believe all the gifts of the spirit are alive and well. That includes prophesy and speaking in tongues (people speaking actual languages they did not know) . I have seen them and experienced them first hand.

Someone with the gift of prophesy doesn't necessarily make them a prophet. It also doesn't mean that their prophesy should be canonized as scripture.

Yes. There is a spectrum. Believe it or not, I would be classified as a "moderate" Calvinist.
