Dr. Harold Varmus, president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and co-chairman of Obama's science advisory council, said Sunday that Obama will "endorse the notion that public policy must be guided by sound, scientific advice."

Obama's order will direct the National Institutes of Health to develop revised guidelines on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research within 120 days, said Varmus, who joined Barnes in the conference call with reporters.

"The president is, in effect, allowing federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research to the extent that it's permitted by law -- that is, work with stem cells themselves, not the derivation of stem cells," he said.

This law signed by Obama does not increase the number of adult cell embryos obtained (read abortion). It increases the use of existing adult stem cell lines. It doesn't support the murder of unborn children but rather the use of what we have to save life through scientific research. If you consider this to involve murder of the unborn then the Bush administration was just as guilty.

I'm just trying to picture in my mind someone with this line of thinking trying to jump through all those hoops. How "acrobatic."

Embryonic stem cell research means that human life is murdered. There is no justification for this.

I am a diabetic. I would rather die early from diabetes than know that my life was extended by murder.

Researchers highly value embryonic stem cells because of their potential to turn into any organ or tissue cell in the body. Stem cells have this ability for a short time. A few days before the embryo would implant in the uterus, it starts to develop into specific cells that will turn into skin or eyes or other parts of a developing fetus.


When the embryo is 4 or 5 days old, scientists extract the stem cells and put them in a petri dish. With the removal of these stem cells -- of which there may be about 30 -- the embryo is destroyed.

How can you say this? I've read the article three times, trying to figure out how you came to this conclusion; instead, I see the article explaining that extracting the cells destroys the embryo, necessarily leading to the conclusion that more embryos will be needed; and two senators who state that "we shouldn't have to create life in order to enhance life" and that we can do the same research without the destruction of living human embryos.

So how did you reach a conclusion that's completely opposite of the conclusions drawn in the article?
