BJU Prof Randy Jaeggli's book on alcohol

I am reading his book and hearing his argument for total abstinence. JOJ will be jumping for joy to read this and believe me I will read him carefully. Has anyone read the book and what do you think? How does he make better arguments than Gentry? I will also be reading "Drinking with Calvin and Luther" by Jim West as well to get a better perspective on the history of alcohol in the church throughout the centuries. I have only read the introduction and Randy has cited much good evidence to the argument of alcohol abuse and to that we can agree that alcohol can be abused. He also says on a page that drinks that the Bible calls strong drink or beer had a ethanol as low as 0.5%. This is a little lower than the Mike's hard lemonade light beverage. Is this true or false?

Do not take this wrongly, Evan. As many times as you have started threads about alcohol, I wonder if you are looking for some type of justification.

Seems to me that if someone really had no problem with it, he would not wish to discuss it so much.

It's been awhile since I've read the topic (I don't drink, so I don't really care too much about whether or not it is justified), but if I remember correctly strong drink would have the alcohol content of undiluted wine. In biblical times (as with some people today) wine was diluted. I don't know if it was for moderation or to purify the water, or simply for a beverage. But must of the beverages we consider light on alcohol (beer, wine coolers, hard lemonade, hard tea, ect.) would, I believe, be considered "strong drink".

I am very interested in the topic and enjoy reading books on it. Cant wait till the "Drinking with Calvin and Luther" book arrives.

If the water was all bad in the Bible then explain why Daniel was able to drink it?

No! Mike's Light has much more than 0.5%!

The Light refers to low calories, not low alcohol content.

Mike's Light uses artificial sweeteners, so its drinkers can keep their girlish figures.

Wine averages 14% alcohol by volume. When cut 5 to 1 with water that comes to about 2.4% by volume. Which makes Mikes about 3 times as alcoholic as bible wine. Or, as the bible says, and JonC above, it would qualify as "strong drink."

Wrong. I was talking about the light version of Mikes!

So, you are now accusing Mike's of lying about their own products?

"Mike's Hard Lemonade Co. makes two brands of drinks: those labeled "Harder" are 8 percent alcohol by volume, while those labeled "Hard" are 5 percent. Alcohol by volume is a standard measure to calculate how much alcohol is in a beverage."

Okay Randy has made a excellent point so far in my reading that the biblical wine is not the same as Modern wine which is far more intoxicating. This is true so modern christians need to not drink as much of it! We shall see how he justifies abstinence next.
