Ah, the venerable old AK. The most manufactured automatic/semi-automatic rifle in the world. 
I've been meaning to get one of those. I will probably get the AK74 as the 5.56 ammo is a bit easier to come by. But I wouldn't turn down a 47 if the price were right. I already have 7.62/.308 ammo for my Remington.
Armscor is even building an AK look-alike in .22lr.

Well......NJ got guns. Every shooting, every hold up, every drug bust, every rape generally has one in the police reports.
I had a Glock once. Sold it and bought a real gun.
I have several dozen more if you would like to see them.

I cannot say that I mistrust the design, but one friend of mine had one blow on him. He also had another that fired on its own when the round would go in to battery. First one was replaced, second sent in to be fixed.
I will not say what I have, but it took a long time before I could make myself buy a plastic pistol. Now I have three. *laugh*

My buddy still has his fathers Walther that he confiscated from the SS. He is real proud of it too. Has the swastika on it & he carry's it into Paterson & Newark. Perfect concealed firearm.
For carry? Go thin. The best gun is the one you'll wear every day, and though body type and clothing styles factor in, a single stack is generally easier to pack in the waistband.
I usually carry my PF9, my double stack guns come out when winter clothing makes outside tbe waisteband carry easy.
I have the full size M&P in .40 cal. I use it for competitive shooting. It has the Apex Tactical trigger modification so is not a good carry gun.
If you are going to be using it for everyday carry I would go with the Compact due to the larger capacity. I would also get the one with the thumb safety. The thinner Shield is better for skinny guys, but with the proper holster even a skinny guy can conceal a pretty large gun. My everyday carry pistol is a SIG P-225 9mm. But I am 5'10" and about 180 pounds so concealing is not all that difficult for me.
I would also recommend getting it in 9mm. Plenty of stopping power, more rounds in the magazine, and inexpensive ammo so you can practice regularly at the range.
