Genesis 1 says that man was created in the image of God.
What does it mean to be created in the image of God?
Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.Common Traits
1. God and man are both moral agents.
2. Both have free will
3. Both can love and value love
Context: At least two possibilities imho. (1) Having dominion over God's creation as God has dominion.(2) Relationship: God exists in relationship with the Godhead...Father, Son, Holy Spirit: 3 persons existing in unity as one God.
Mankind was created for relationship: male and female He created them. The relationship between a husband and wife reflects the relationship within the Godhead. Male and female become 1 flesh.
There are two words related to our creation : in the image of God after His likeness.And if I am correct that the image of God in creation is only applied to man, then it should be something that distinguishes him from both animals and angels.
Don't know - don't hang with themDolphins and apes have some interesting conversation within their own species.
Agreed, though I think "likeness" is used here as an appositive (for lack of a thinking of another term), a restatement of the idea of "image." Why? Because in the explanation of the doing of the thing that God said let us do, he only uses the word "image" (tselem). If God "made [man] in our image, after our likeness" he can also state it simply as "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." (IOW, without reusing the word likeness, see Genesis 1:27.)There are two words related to our creation : in the image of God after His likeness.
Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Genesis 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;
image - resemblence tselem צֶלֶם
Likeness - like manner demuwth דְּמוּת
Note Genesis 1:26 - "our" image, "our" likeness.
What do you think of these qualities in angels, who, as far as I know, are never said to be created "in the image of God"?IMO our greatest "image and likeness" qualities endued by God involve Intelligence. reasoning ability, communication ability and creativity especially in the realm of language.
