Don't legalize Drugs...

I'm not seeing the logical fallacy:

This has nothing to do with innocent until proven guilty. I think you must be misunderstanding something I said here.
If it is illegal to posses or sell illicit drugs, than you are innocent of any crime unless and until you are proven to have possessed or distributed illicit drugs.

So, you are quite correct.
There is no "War on drugs" either. That's the point I'm making...
Only prosecutions of drug dealers and possessors.

If there's no war on drugs then why do we have an 80 billion dollar a year militarized police force and federal agencies of questionable constitutional standing riding around in armored vehicles breaking down doors (in many cases the wrong doors) and going after drug users?

Why do we have a federal agency working in concert with a known violent Mexican drug cartel while putting their "customers" behind bars?

Google Search "dea worked with sinaloa cartel".

Why do we have helicopter gunships in Columbia?

Why isn't alcohol illegal? It's harmful isn't it?

If you maintain that Federal Law Enforcement and the "militarized" police forces are overly powerful, questionable Constitutionally and they often errantly "kick-in" the wrong doors, I agree.....

How does our presumed over-reach of Federal Law enforcement mean that we should legalize any and all drugs?
Why do we have a federal agency working in concert with a known violent Mexican drug cartel while putting their "customers" behind bars?
Because mankind is evil and Governments and Government agents can be, and often are corrupt.

What does that prove? That we should legalize drugs?.....
Oh, o.k.
Why isn't alcohol illegal? It's harmful isn't it?
Good question.....
Are you advocating we attempt Prohibition of alcohol?

I don't think that's workable or reasonable....

But, again....I can understand the difference between an ex-post-facto attempt to illegalize the use of something which has been used by about 90% of all of humanity throughout the ENTIRETY of Earth's history.....which is accepted almost Universally in all other parts of the World....

And equivocating that with relatively new (often far more immediately destructive or harmful) and nearly Universally rejected drugs despised by practically all other nations on Earth as well.

This is why equivocation is a logical fallacy.

Alcohol (been around forever, almost Universally used, legal everywhere else, and previously legal in the U.S.)

vs.

Drugs (most of the modern ones being relatively new, used by much smaller segments of the population, and also illegal nearly everywhere else, and banned for the most part soon after they became prominent)

Do you not see the difference?

....Read the article.....
Theodore Dalrymple is wiser and far smarter and knowledgeable than me.........and you.

He discusses a lot of these things in it. If you are open-minded, you might give it a read.

Put down the joint and read what I ACTUALLY said.

Semantics. And more prejudice.

I don't believe in "big intrusive" government any more than you do...
But I'm not a Libertine either.

And yet here you are advocating for one of things that has made the government bigger and more intrusive at the expense of all our liberties.

There is a happy medium between the two.

Yes and the government can be trusted to keep itself in check. Consitution? We don't need no steenking constitution our government can be trusted!

You do not believe in complete and full-fledged "individual liberty".

I don't?

You yourself would enforce limitations upon "individual liberty".

I would?

Would you let someone possess or distribute child pornography?
If not...
You know then that there are limits on "individual liberty".....and you would use the force of Law to limit them. Just as any sane person would.

Child pornography is a crime because it is one person initiating aggression against another. In this case a helpless child. Individual liberty has nothing to do with it. No one has the liberty to initiate aggression against another.

But you're asking the government to do just that with drug offenders aren't you? What's the difference if you initiate the aggression or you have the government do it for you? Do you believe your hands are clean because you had a government agent initiate aggression on another?

Here's what I believe should be done to those who produce or distribute child pornography. Charge them, try them in a court of law by a jury and if they are found guilty take them to the village square and hang them by the neck until they are dead so all can see their fate.

I doubt even you are that "conservative".

I can agree with that....
But I am not foolish enough to think that illicit drug sales and their use are a solitary crime.

I know better.
It is FAR from victimless....
FAR from it.

And who are the victims? The drug addict's families? Of course they are victims. Now you would double that by locking away their family member for years and causing them even more anguish.

The jails are full already, the "land of the free" has the largest prison population on earth! Has it stopped drug use? Has it even lessened it?

No. But it has torn mothers from children and children from their families for simple non violent drug use. Your way creates as many or more victims than the drugs themselves.

But you'd probably rather not think about that aspect of it. And for sure you'd rather avoid thinking about what happens to the non violent drug "offender" in the prison you would have them locked away in where there are real criminals that will do unspeakable things to them. Are these not victims of your government intervention into the private lives of citizens? But I guess in your mind they deserve what they get right?

I mean after all they're only stupid drug users. They aren't nearly as smart and righteous as you.

huh?
I don't know if the term "non-sequitor" is a strong enough term for this.

I don't think that....

Sure you do. If we go by what you have said so far we can even identify the philosophy behind your thinking. It's called "collectivism". The idea that the individual should be sacrificed for the "greater good" of society.

That's the core philosophy of communism, socialism, modern liberalism and authoritarianism and is the opposite of our nation's founding principles.

I don't believe that a society stoned on heroin is one with no victims and a million happy freedom-loving citizens all collectively doing one another and their wives and children no harm whatsoever.

But yet you'd keep the black market in drugs healthy where only the drug cartels, big banks and violent gangs and government benefit. Look as long as there is a demand for a product someone is going to be supplying that demand.

Your way does nothing to reduce demand. It's been 40 years and the supply hasn't gone down. On the contrary it has increased and the drugs have become more powerful and more plentiful with no control over strength or purity.

You've encouraged an unregulated market of the worst kind.

And by doing so you're putting millions at serious risk of dying from contaminated and or toxic combinations. Is that how we're suppose to love our neighbors?

You think drug-use is a victimless crime.
I think that's stupid.

I believe I've already "debunked" this.

You seem reticent to distinguish between overly-large sodas, trans-fats and opiates....
Sane people know the difference.

I just think we should be consistent. If we're going to call on government to protect us from harming ourselves we shouldn't stop at half measures, because as you may have noticed lately the government won't. It'll take whatever power you allow it and expand on it till we have no liberty or freedom what so ever.

A huge overbearing militarized nanny state with the power to regulate what we put into our bodies or dictate what we must put into our bodies is not what we need especially one that views it's own citizens as a threat to it's hold on power.

I J --

When we make an argument for something, we assume the opposition is rational. That, unfortunately, is an irrational assumption regarding the person with whom you're trying to discuss the subject.

He is regularly guilty of circular reasoning that goes like this: "I’m correct because I’m smarter than you. And I must be smarter than you because I’m correct."

My advice? Don't feed the troll. Let him think he's smarter than everyone here, and maybe eventually ...

Naw, never mind. Things like that never go away.

What a joke. This coming from a guy who's only argument is to call people who disagree with him names and insult them.

He calls me a "marxist" while he advocates for bigger more intrusive government and a Stasi style militarized police state.

He'd call George Washington a "marxist"! Evidently he hasn't even got a clue to what marxism is.

TND is a poser folks. He's no different than Obama pretending he's something he isn't. He waves his flag around like he's some kind of patriot while he pushes for and defends every thing that is destroying this country.

He has shown his true colors here many times over. He's a sick fascist authoritarian that hates individual liberty and our founding principles playing himself off as a patriot.

He's also the biggest hypocrite ever to show up here. And he has proven that time and again.

He's the perfect example of everything that is wrong in this country.

And he's going to keep posting his hyper hypocritical hatred and poison here until you all grow a backbone and start standing up to this childish name calling bully and putting him in his place.

All he can do is call you names. That's all he knows. Imagine, this 60 year old man come here and acts like a 6 year old when he doesn't get his way. Then pretends that makes him "credible".

What he needs is good old fashion spanking. That's what 6 years olds get when they act up.

CLICK HERE to see what TND really looks like.

See this folks? These guys can't win an argument by pushing fear and corporate lies so they fall back to their default tactics. Personal attacks and displaying their hypocrisy as if it's some kind of badge of honor that gives them credibility.

What a joke.

Mo and Larry, what a crew, hey where's Curly? I imagine he'll be in shortly to toss out the "conspiracy theory" bomb again.

They'll keep acting like a bunch of spoiled kids till YOU act like adults and start standing up to them.

That's okay. I already won this debate anyway. How can I tell? It's easy. I won when my "opponents" had to start acting like children and attack me instead of what I said.

5 Nobel Prize Winning Economists and Several World Leaders: End the War On Drugs

It’s Become Obvious to Everyone that the War On Drugs Is a Failure

We noted last year that stopping the “War On Drugs” would save the U.S. $85 billion to $90 billion per year.

After all, a single state – Colorado – pulled in around $2 million dollars in taxes on marijuana sales in the first month after legalizing pot.

Last week, we pointed out that a new poll shows that the American people are sick of the war on drugs, noting that a broad majority of Americans are ready to significantly reduce the role of the criminal justice system in dealing with people who use drugs. The poll found:

63% of Americans think that we should stop mandatory prison terms for drug law violations

54% are in favor of marijuana legalization

67% say the government should focus more on providing treatment for people who use drugs like cocaine and heroin, and only 26% think the focus should be more on prosecuting people who use such drugs

Now, 5 Nobel prize winning economists and several world leaders have chimed in and called for an end to the War On Drugs.

< snip >

Why has the War On Drugs continued so long when it is harmful and counter-productive? We wouldn’t want to be cynical … would we?

DUDE....you loose a lot of credibility with this post.

Of course I do Dude. Everyone knows a guy that constantly acts like a child, hurls insults around, accuses people of being "marxists" when they question authority and puts his hypocrisy on display day after day for all to marvel at is a shining example of what credibility is.

The guy is a total fake. He's not a conservative. He's a big government authoritarian. The only time he cares about the constitution is when the democrats are trampling on it. Republicans can trample it all they want and he looks the other way. The only time he cares about the size and intrusiveness of government is when the democrats are "in power". Republicans can increase the size and intrusiveness of government and he's okay with it he loves big government and big brother when the republicans are "in charge". If someone points out how the republicans are trampling the constitution and increasing the size and scope of government he brands them a "marxist" a "liberal" and "traitors" repeating the words taken directly from the National Socialist's propaganda play book he undoubtedly picked up from Saudi Faux Snews talking heads and goes into behavior a 6 year old would get his little behind paddled but good for.

If it weren't for his double standards he wouldn't have any at all.

If you think that's credibility then the joke is on you. Dude.

And yet here you are advocating for one of things that has made the government bigger and more intrusive at the expense of all our liberties.
How does keeping illicit drugs illegal make government "bigger"?
To my knowlege, there are laws in my home State of Florida which render it illegal to send alligators via the postal system...
Does that make government "Bigger"?

I also take it that there is a State law in Massacheusettes which taxes a man who has a goatie...
Intrusive, yes...
How does that make government "bigger"?
You are not making any sense.
Yes and the government can be trusted to keep itself in check.
No, it can't...and nobody on this thread would suggest as much....this is a red-herring and has no bearing on the conversation.
Consitution? We don't need no steenking constitution our government can be trusted!
Again....no one thinks that.
But, where is it precisely that the Constitution guarantees you the right to shoot heroin up your veins...
Where is it exactly that the Constitution protects your precious right to snort Cocaine?

Please tell me where that is to be found...
Is it in the Bill of Rights?

continued in next post....

Mere possession is an act of aggression??
hmmm.....no doubt Making it is....but every case of mere possession?
You haven't thought this through have you.

Suppose the object of it is now a consenting adult who freely distributes and sells the item....is mere possession then, an "act of aggression"?
Suppose it was made in Romania?? Does the U.S. Constitution permit the prosecution of crimes which took place in another country?
What if making it is legal in another country????
Why would mere possession of the legally purchased item be a crime here in the U.S.... ?
How would that be an "act of aggression"?

I'll continue demonstrating your impoverished thinking in the next post...
