I just learned that a Baptist pastor has an excellent course on Alcohol at http://www.biblefortoday.org/PDF/Alcohol Bible Study Course.pdf. I think it would be great for everyone to read this.
I didn't get past this...

This study is written to be used with the KING JAMES BIBLE, otherwise your answers are going to be incorrect.

Pretty much negates the entire article right there. If you don't have the "proper" translation the answers differ. Truth is not relative.

OK - Let's see. The first thing that is said is

"This study is written to be used with the KING JAMES BIBLE, otherwise your
answers are going to be incorrect."

Oh really? Strike one.

"A. Jesus could not have drunk alcoholic wine at the wedding feast, or He
would have been disobeying the Bible commands concerning kings and princes. "

Jesus is the Divine King - not an earthly king.

"B. Just because Jesus was said to turn the water into wine, does not mean that
He made alcoholic wine. In the Bible, wine is a generic term, that is, a general
term for a whole group or class of grape-related products. "

The context refutes this.

"C. Jesus would have never attended a wedding feast where alcoholic wine was
being drunk. "

He sat with sinners, didn't He?

"D. Does “well drunk” in John 2:10 mean intoxicated with alcohol? "

Not necessarily.

"E. If Jesus had made alcoholic wine for a bunch of people who had already
been drinking so much of it that they were drunk, then He would have been
helping a bunch of drunk people get more drunk. "

Wrongly interpreting the passage.

"F. Jesus would not have gotten more glory as the sinless Savior, by making a
bunch of drunk people more drunk. "

Who said He made them more drunk?

II. Was Paul Telling Timothy To Drink Alcoholic Wine To Help His Physical
Infirmities?
"A. No, because Timothy was a church leader. "

There is no prohibition against alcohol for church leaders in Scripture.

"B. No, because Timothy had frequent stomach trouble of some kind. "

This is exactly why Paul told Timothy to drink wine.

"C. No, because Timothy was warned that all sins — even secret ones — will be
brought out at the judgment seat. "

Correct, but that has nothing to do with alcohol.

"A. A Christian is told not to drink alcoholic wine or stronger alcoholic drinks. "

This is a lie.

"B. A Christian is told not to look at alcoholic drinks. "

Another lie.

"C. A Christian is told not to get under the control of alcoholic drinks. "

Oh!! Finally found something I agree with.

OK - So it's pretty much the same old, same old. All terrible Bible interpretation - very much the arguments from a non-scholarly position.

It's interesting that we've seen people flailing around in this discussion trying everything possible - Scripture, logic, reasoning, anecdotal data - to prove how wrong it is to drink alcohol.

In the end, there's just no good proof. And certainly no Biblical proof.

Yep. I do think there is cultural reasons that it might not be wise but that certainly doesn't mean that the Bible forbids it. It's funny that the "excellent course" is the same old tired argument.

When did the temperence movement arise?
About 400 B.C.

Proverbs 23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

*Correction: 588 B.C.
Jeremiah 35:5-6 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine. But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:

The Rechabites were a wise people to abstain from alcohol.

Those who drink the old wine (alcoholic) will never be convinced to drink the new (non alcoholic). They will say the old is better.

You and your wife remind me of some former members here :standingfirminChrist and his wife Linda. They identified themselves as being from Cleveland Mississippi -- you both live in the outskirts of that city. They used to participate in the alcohol threads a lot. Do you know them?

I know several Linda's, but I do not know anyone named standingfirminChrist.

To tell you the truth, Rippon, Cleveland is indeed just on the outskirts of Boyle. But I know very few people in Cleveland. Only the ones that go to our Church.

We are members of a local group that endeavors to stamp out alcohol. We have over 40 members in our group.

If I had my way, there would be none sold in the entire state of Mississippi.

There have been too many accidents, too many homes broken up, too many children and wives battered, too many deaths due to alcohol for it to go on ignored.

Proverbs 23:32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

I'd like someone to work up some numbers on how many lives have been ruined by alcohol, by way of broken families, deaths, abuse, etc.

LINK

"One in 25 deaths around the world is caused by alcohol consumption, and booze is now as damaging to global health as tobacco was a decade ago, according to a new study in the British medical journal the Lancet.

"...Alcohol-related causes of death include accidents, violence, poisoning, mouth and throat cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, suicide, stroke and many others.

"..Those figures, according to Rehm's study, mean that "globally, the effect of alcohol on the burden of disease is about the same size as that of smoking in 2000."

Do you own a gun? Or do you support the right to own a gun?

As a literalistic using this verse as a proof text, white wine is entirely permissible.
