For Those that Think COVID-19 is Like the Flu...

Look at the chart again. Do you see the weekly death rate from any of the five previous years of seasonal flu go from (basically) zero to over 6,000 deaths per week in three weeks?

The closest any previous year comes to that increase in death rate is 2017-2018. In weeks 51-53 the rate went from approximately 4,400 deaths/week to 7,000 deaths/week. Another way of stating this is that the rate increased 59% in three weeks.

As you can see in the chart COVID-19 went from about 50 deaths/week to 6,400 deaths/week in weeks 11-13. Another way to say this is the rate increased 12,700% in three weeks.

In this particular characteristic, virulency, Covid-19 is most definitely NOT like the flu.

I'm finding it unbelievable that people are denying the simple truths right before their eyes and still comparing this to the flu. I mean, if they wanted to compare it to the Spanish flu that might be a little closer although this virus is much more contagious and the Spanish had a 3% death rate of those infected wherein we are currently at a 3.2% death (this is going up daily, even with our high rate of testing!) and most of the other other countries with the most infections are around a 10% death rate.

If left unchecked and abiding with the herd immunity mentality, to just ignore it and go back to work would make the Spanish look like a walk in the park. To deny the strategy of our top experts and to allow or encourage the letting of this disease to run unchecked in panic over the economy is insanity, unpatriotic and immoral to neglect the duty of every American to make sure no one is unnecessarily exposed to this virus.

Hey if it helps you sleep. I bet the democrat lawmaker testimony about HCQ gave you cold-sweat nightmares.
Your mind reading machine needs a tune up.

Why would I be worried? It is great that she has recovered. And if HCQ actually helped that is wonder news. It is one more piece of anecdotal evidence in support of HCQ working. That needs to be considered with all the other positive and negative anecdotal evidence we have and any RCTs we have as well. That is how evidence based medicine works. We don’t just look at the evidence that supports the conclusion we would like. And the conclusion I would like is the same as the one Trump would like, conclusive evidence that HCQ is an effective therapy for covid19. Doctors should keep using it selectively while we await those answers.

I think what we will find is that there is a window of opportunity earlier in the disease where HCQ helps. But once it gets to a certain point, it doesn’t. The problem is that a lot of people at that earlier stage would also recover if we just did nothing so it is hard to tease out who will benefit and who we are potentially giving more risks of the side effects (a rare but potentially fatal arrhythmia is the main one we worry about).

It’s a two front “war”. We must preserve health and wealth as well as we can. It’s a delicate balancing act but we have to do it. To overemphasize one over the other would be a mistake. May God have mercy on us all.

More interesting news. Looks like Trump cracked another home run.

TRUMP GETS MILLIONS OF HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE PILLS FROM INDIA

Why would he do this for something sooooo unproven?

Dr. Anthony Cardillo says it works on very ill patients. He was seeing a sudden turnaround in just hours. Guess he didn't get the memo that it only works "earlier in the disease." Same with Dr. Marc Siegel talking about his father who was so sick he was certain it was the end. They're just not getting the memos.

Bottom line, many "experts" are fumbling right now. Thankfully we have a President with common sense.

the United States cannot return to normal until a Chinese coronavirus vaccine is available, which he speculated could take between 12-18 months.

If he wants run the risk of massive civil disobedience or maybe even civil unrest, then just see what happens if government tries to extend the severe form of this lockdown past May 1 - at least outside of any hot spots that might exist at that point.

He may want just that. It would be no skin off his nose.

We will return to normal long before there is a vaccine.
I like your optimism but although we will be able to return to some normalcy we will still be in battle with this virus and having to take new precautions that deal with new infections, contact racing, isolation and containment that will be far from normal until we have a vaccine.

The antibodies treatment looks promising.

Yes, the antibody treatments to deal with those infected and save their lives will be huge and the antibody tests being widely available will allow anyone who has these antibodies to resume a normal life. Big numbers of people with antibodies will certainly help, but until we find find a cure there will be a large amount of vulnerable people that need to be protected.

Anyone missing Obama right now? Here's what his adviser is recommending.

Ezekiel Emanuel: ‘We Cannot Return to Normal Until There’s a Vaccine,’ Could Be 12-18 Months

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, an architect of Obamacare and special adviser to the director-general of the World Health Organization, told MSNBC’s “The Last Word” that the United States cannot return to normal until a Chinese coronavirus vaccine is available, which he speculated could take between 12-18 months.
