General P dances to the questions

General Petraeus, a master of dancing & double speak

Asked repeatedly yesterday what "conditions" he is looking for to begin substantial U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq after this summer's scheduled drawdown, Army Gen. David H. Petraeus said he will know them when he sees them. For frustrated lawmakers, it was not enough. "A year ago, the president said we couldn't withdraw because there was too much violence," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.). "Now he says we can't afford to withdraw because violence is down." Asked Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.): "Where do we go from here?"

Gen Petraeus said he had recommended to Bush that he complete in July the withdrawal of the 20,000 extra troops. He also proposed a 45-day period of "consolidation and evaluation," before he would recommend any further pullouts. Sounds reasonable.

In fact, it doesn’t sound so different from Barack Obama’s comment that while he wants U.S. troops out of Iraq he would not initiate a precipitous withdrawal. Hmm… is Obama dancing too?

As for Kennedy, he is a master at asking 'questions' while not allowing a response.

Why should we believe anything this administration or their spokespeople say? :tonofbricks:

Because Gen Petraeus is a professional who has turned the whole situation around over there. Of course if you wear blinders you won't see.

Is that all you have to discredit General Petraeus? Bush is the President? How about looking at the stats. Since they line up with what he says that would be a good place to start. Instead of parroting moveon.orgs talking points.

Your reply is off subject .... and Obama has no track record as president as of yet. Give him 7+ years and then all of us can answer your question.

The current admin. has a very poor record of truth telling.

You can bet that if the General was saying what the libs wanted to hear they wouldnt try to tie him to the President. He would be touted as all knowing.

Yep. When things are going well we are told by the Bush administration and its supporters that we can't bring our troops home because things might get worse if we do so. When things are going badly we are told by the Bush administration and its supporters that we can't bring our troops home because things are worse. The bottom line is that the Bush administration and its supporters have no intentions of bring our troops home regardless of the conditions in Iraq as they really do want to keep troops stationed in Iraq for decades and decades as we have in Germany and Japan and South Korea.

Sure, Sunni vs. Shiite violence is down - the neighborhoods have been cleansed so that the two groups don't share neighborhoods now.

Sure, Sunnis are not fighting as much with our troops - we are paying them off not to do so.

I heard an analyst on C-SPAN yesterday say that it will be 2012 before the Iraqis will take over internal security and 2018 before the Iraqis will take over border security. If we keep losing on average 800 of America's finest each year that means we might see 8,000 more U.S. troops killed in Iraq over the next ten years, plus the tens of thousands more that will be wounded.

Most people keep ignoring the one major fact about withdrawl........as soon as we leave, IRAN will move right in.

Like it or not we are committed to finish it or we wil be putting the whole world in danger by handing Iraq over to Iran. General P made this clear.

Whether you support the war or not, you must be realiatic about the situation and understand that Iran wants to control the world's oil supply, and they want to "wipe Isreal off the face of the map"

We handed Iraq over to Iran when we removed Saddam Hussein from power. The majority of people in Iraq are Shiites just as they are in Iran. Hussein and his Sunni cronies kept the Shiites under their thumbs for decades in Iraq. Iraq and Iran were enemies as long as Hussein was in power.

If Iraq is to be a sovereign country then it will align itself with Iran based on religion.

Shouldn't we be realistic about a few other major facts as well?

Facts like we're broke and at the mercy of our overly extended credit with other nations like the tiny island nation of Japan and can't afford to keep doing this?

You think it will be cheaper AFTER Iran has control of Iraq and all oil?

If we would drill our own oil and move to alternative energy sources(not corn ethanol!) then we as a nation couldn't care less how much oil Iran has control over.

Realistically, does anyone think that a sovereign Iraq controlled by Shiites would not align itself with a sovereign Iran controlled by Shiites?

I'm with you on the oil drilling. There is enough oil off the coast of New Orleans to supply this country for 500 years!!

Iran and Iraq have been bitter enemies for a LONG time. I don't believe they would ever align with each other.

Do you know why they were enemies? Because Iraq was controlled by Sunnis while Saddam Hussein was the dictator. Now Iraq is controlled by Shiites, just as Iran is controlled by Shiites. Do you understand the change in the situation now?

I believe Moveon.org had it correct the first time. His name should be Gen. BetrayUs.

Just more deception and spin from the Bush administration.

Actually, this General was approved by both parties.
