Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath,
Context...context...context. God also gave specific instructions in building the ark of the covenant which included engraved images. The intent of the Commandment was to prohibit idol worship. Otherwise, there are a lot if sculptors and artists who are living lives of sin.

I worship God and hope He changes his mind on some issues. Moses got God to "repent of the evil he planned to do to Israel".

So yes, I love and worship a Good who I disagree with...so did Moses
No you do not worship God if you hold the idea that He needs to change His mind on some things. 2Cor. 13:5,8. Like satan you are twisting scripture for your own evil purpose. I suggest that you repent and come to faith.

We do not get saved by praying a prayer, being baptized, asking Jesus into our hearts, confessing our sins, joining a church, cleaning up our lives, doing penance, taking the bread and the wine, or doing all these thing accumulative.

Salvation takes repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Acts 20:21. Make no mistake. We cannot be a friend of Christ and remain a rebel against God. The word repent, from the Greek word “metanoia”, means a change of mind or direction. That change is not 50%, 75%, or 99%. It is 100% or we are not repenting.

God is not receiving those who almost or kind of repent. It is like the word about face which is a 180 degree turn. We turn from not wanting God fully in our lives to accepting Him fully in our lives.

When any person comes to the place where they are broken over their sin to the point they want to get right with God no matter what it will cost them they are in a state/spirit of repentance toward God.

We then take that heart we have towards God and place it on the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Master and that becomes faith. At that moment God’s grace through Christ is applied to us and we are born again, saved from eternal hell and sealed by the Spirit so that we will never again return to the practice of sinning. 1John 3:9,10.

Repentance of sin is the result of the new birth/salvation and will be part of the sanctification process and our new life with the Lord Jesus Christ, Eph 2:10. While we may sin from time to time after salvation it will not be our practice 1John 3:9,10.

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

I'm trying to create Christian Unity. I see nothing disrupting Christian Unity more than the Sola scriptura Doctrine.

The Sola scriptura Doctrine destroys itself because the Bible proves it to be false
Well, you must be bound to tradition if not to the Word of God!
The RCC and Orthodox have posted here before exalting the equivalence of tradition to the Scriptures.
If you are neither, beware that Cultists are heavily discouraged from posting!

Judith,

Have you ever personally known drug addicts or alcoholics who were broken over their sin to the point they wanted to get right with God no matter what it will cost them? They are repentant. They express faith. God accepts them.
(Ephesians 2:5,6)

While they may fall many times, or die in their addiction, they are eternally saved, correct?

I chronically hear Christians say that God would never command people to go against his word... I really can't believe people that know scripture hold on to that belief... it's easily proven False yet the myth remains strangely prevalent.

God says thou shall not kill and then orders the Israelites to kill many people including women, children, and babies that were without sin.
It is not killing when a government does justice. That does not give license to anyone to kill people.
Here is an example:
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth:

Numbers 21:9
So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

God commanded Moses to do the exact opposite of what he formerly commanded.

So, in context it was a bad thing and forbidden to make idols, or such craven images. When God ordered it done, it was a good thing with a good purpose.

God can do whatever he wants to.
Man can't.
God can and has had people do the opposite of what scripture says. The first Christians did the opposite of what the Mosaic law commands. Yet Jesus said he came not to abolish the law or remove one word from the law. God changes his mind a lot ;)

So, if a church does something that the Bible says not to do, who knows if it was actually inspired by God?

We now have the bible as a guide so that is the standard. Though we or a church, or a bank, or an angel from heaven says to go against that, they are wrong!
The Bible alone Doctrine is built on a premise that blows itself up!
False. I haven't noticed Jesus returning and speaking directly to us have you? Until He does, we have the word He inspired and gave us.

The Bible alone is all that is needed to prove that the Bible alone is not the sole rule of sacred theology! Ouch!

False. Heaven and earth shall pass away but His words shall never pass away. God does not change. If there are a few exceptions He made to the usual rules, that also was for a reason, and never went against the spirit of the word. It only seems to man to be so. God did not let Abraham kill Isaac, though He told Him to. It was a test. The image Moses was told to make did not get people worshiping demon gods and forgetting Him.

How God doesn't work in one time in history, is how he might work in another way at another time in history.

If a Christian believes they are receiving healing and grace from the mother of God or the souls in heaven , how do you know God is not choosing to bestow Grace on them through his mother or redeemed sanctified souls and angels in heaven....by that means?
We should ask where the healing or grace actually comes from. Can we say that Mary in heaven did it or God? Nowhere does Jesus tell us to pray to angels or people on earth or heaven. While God does work within our faith to some extent, I see no reason people should not know God saves, and that He answers prayer, not dead folks ( well alive folks who we on earth think of as dead, cause they left earth) in heaven.

"No you do not worship God if you hold the idea that He needs to change His mind on some things."

But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."

Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them!" Having said this, he fell asleep.

36Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which translated in Greek is called Dorcas); this woman was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity which she continually did. 37And it happened at that time that she fell sick and died; and when they had washed her body, they laid it in an upper room.38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, having heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him, imploring him, “Do not delay in coming to us.” 39So Peter arose and went with them. When he arrived, they brought him into the upper room; and all the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing all the tunics and garments that Dorcas used to make while she was with them. 40But Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed, and turning to the body, he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. 41And he gave her his hand and raised her up; and calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive. 42It became known all over Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. 43And Peter stayed many days in Joppa with a tanner named Simon.

Last bit just to show Peter making requests of dead people.

Matt Janes quotes the Scripture, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath,"

He comments, concerning the making of the bronze serpent:

"God commanded Moses to do the exact opposite of what he formerly commanded."

Some questions arise in my mind.

Since you don't agree with Sola Scriptura, do you believe that
Holy Tradition makes statements that are the exact opposite of each other?

The interior of the modern RCC that my friend took me to is absolutely beautiful! There is a statue of Mary and Christ is on a large, bronze cross behind where the priest stands. There are also angels with their wings lifted high, on the table for the Eucharist.

According to your reasoning above, are not what the RCC uses "graven images"?

The Catholic Church bans idols and giving adoration that belongs to God to anything less than God.... It's just, Christ redeemed The Souls of the Dead, and the souls in heaven started appearing to people and working miracles, and eventually the church decided it is okay to invoke them as the communion of saints, family in heaven, friends in high places.

You seem to think that because God one time commanded something Personally to Moses, that gives us an excuse to make millions of craven images without any command from God.

How do you know God wasn't guiding the church councils that approved of those images? The word of God is not limited to scripture by the way.

It is very biblical that the way God acts one time in history, he can act totally different another time in history... We have a new covenant. Some of what was formerly forbidden is now permitted. God knew that Catholics would become the largest Christian denomination and to be the only denomination for centuries. God knew they would have crucifixes statues and pray to Mary. Yet Jesus never said this bothered him. neither did the other authors of the New Testament. It clearly was not an important issue to them.

Certainly not!

A one time event does not make the rule.

Graven images are used by the RCC. You can't call them anything else.

I don't approve of any images:
our Baptist Church has none; no interior or exterior Crosses, either!
(Christ is Risen--why the need for a Cross?).

The Scriptures are definitive: only Church Councils that embraced them
fully had God's Approval.
