Have MV's caused more confusion than good?

Having read the whole thread, I will come down on the side that feels the only reason any member is confused by the reading of a different version is because there is a general dumbing down of Christianity. (ok, so no one is surprised  )

We have to study the Scripture in whole to look at the parts. We have to look at the parts to understand the whole. This isn't a "I'm gonna hear what the preacher has to say about it on Sunday" endeavor. This is a life-long work. Having different versions and a variety of study tools is an enhancement to that study.

As to missing verses - there aren't that many. I pulled my ESV and NASB off the shelf (those are the ones handy - the others are in the room in which Ron is napping, so they'll have to wait), and looked at Mark 9. The missing verses are mentioned in the side/footnotes of both with enough information to glean what the verses were in addition to why they were left out of both.

I'm not only MV for modern version, but I'm MV for multiple versions. I'm so very grateful to have them all to read.

Right, and even the 1611 had the sidenotes that included varient readings... but the unscrupulous publishers decided to do away with these sidenotes that were there to show the reader that what is in the KJV had other possibilities... Now we have a dumbing down of Christiandom, and when we want to add those notes back as the MVs have done, we confuse people...

It is not the MVs fault, it is the laziness of Christians that is causing the confusion... Study to show thyself approved...

Here's a hint on how to handle varient readings...
Your pastor is reading.. you notice a Little number in the middle of your paragraph... you look to the bottom, and low and behold, it is there... along with an explanation of why it is there...
Make a note of this... go back to listening to your pastor, and when you get home, study the text...
Find out who wrote it, when it was written, to who was it written, What type of literature is it (narrative, letters, poetry, prophecy, etc)... Read the context... research the original reader's culture to find out what it meant to the original readers... run a search on all verses that relate to this verse... And when you get done, apply this text to your life...
If there is a verse missing, find out why... the NET bible has a lot of info on varient readings...

And like Hope of Glory has said, when you get down to the brass facts, the KJV has usually added these verses in... And the MVs are being truthful to the originals... The older copiess are more reliable than the newer copies...
IOWs if there are 10 copies of a text from 33 ad to 1000 ad without a verse, then 50 copies of texts from 1000 ad to 1611 ad with the verse.. the verse was not part of the original...

Did you ever play the gossip game... the closer to the original the more accurate it is...

As said earlier, if it is too confusing, get a copy of the version your pastor reads from... If you don't trust your pastor to read from a good version, don't go to that church... duh... If I couldn't trust the pastor, I wouldn't go to that church...

I have a sneaking suspicion we are being tricked into a versions battle.. does anyone else feel this way?

I have a copy of the KJV with translators' notes in pdf and txt if anyone's interested.

BTW, it didn't just include variant readings, it also included passages that the translators couldn't agree upon, and some of these passages were doctrinal issues based upon what the translator believed and not on the words themselves.

Such as with the virgins' lamps that were "going" out.

edited to add: It's not the 1611, if I remember correctly in the files. It's a later edit with the original notes.

I truly hope you don't think I'm trying to "trick" anyone into anything? :saint:

Can I repeat this?
I don't know of you can, but you may. :D
Edited to add: I think that dumbing down America is a very powerful tool that Satan uses to confuse the understanding of Scriptures. As one of my teachers used to say: "How can I teach someone Greek when they don't even understand English?"
As a very old teacher, I could not agree more! :)

Whether or not that was the intent, and he says not :saint: , it certainly has drifted that direction at least somewhat.

But the discussion has been good for the most part. This correlates with the rest of what is happening in society. I need it quick, I need to understand it fully fast. If I don't understand it completely, that's ok because I can be an expert with limited knowledge. I want an A for doing little and learning less . . . School's out - I'm reflecting - AND I want to fix this! I want people to return to the joy of learning for learnings sake. I certainly want people to return to the joy of learning and studying Scripture for what it tells them of our God and our Savior and how it may change their lives.

It was available in hard copy when I was a kid, but I haven't seen one recently. Doesn't mean they don't exist. I'll send you the files in just a moment.

I can't believe I said that! That's one thing I pester the kids with on my bus. I have a clicker counter thing that all the little kids want to play with, and they all want to count how many kids are on the bus.

"Can I count?"

"I don't know, can you?"

"May I count?"

"Yes, you may."

It's the exact same word in both verses. In fact, the parts of speech are the same.

Oh, and the word is "witness", which just as our Christian witness, is our "testimony".

BTW, what is the problem with one verse saying, "If I testify about myself, my testimony is true" and the other verse saying, "If I testify about myself, is it not true?"

Both say the same thing, one of them literally, one of them rhetorically.
What testimony is true? What testimony is not true?

Neither are not true.. .He is saying both are true....

"Is it not true?" is the same as "It is true?"

Come on... surely you can see this...Can't you see this?
See...

Let's see what NASB said. NASB did not show the QUESTION on John 5:31 !!!

John 5:31 NASB

If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true.

HOG brought up this QUESTION, " what is the problem with one verse saying, "If I testify about myself, my testimony is true" and the other verse saying, "If I testify about myself, is it not true?" I see the contradiction between HOG and the NASB.

Lessee, if I save $25 a week I should be able to buy this by the end of the summer. Thanks for the link I will buy one!
The price of that copy would feed a family in some countries for a year.

So, a simple question. If you were a Christian in England in 1614 and were lucky enough to own a Geneva Bible would you have been confused by the preacher reading out of the MV (the KJV)?

This question deserves an answer...probably won't get one, though.
