How did modern worship music turn out to be so bad?

Is the theology of King of your heart really that bad? If a believer truly makes Jesus The King of their heart, the rest of those deep theological issues will fall into place.
This whole discussion reminds me of one of my friends who quit going to church. He is a Christian. He goes to small group Bible studies, shows fruit, etc. He just does not like organized church. His most often stated reason is "I just got tired of dealing with those bitter old bastards. They complain about everything and they are in every church around here."

It focuses attention, but it's not on God. The attention is on the preacher and his/her wit.

The great sermons are not about the preacher. In fact, Edwards great sermon was read in a monotone voice with him never looking at the audience. He did not want to be a distraction to God's Spirit at work.

Nope. Does not complain at all really. One of the easiest people to get along with you will ever meet. He is a real get it done type person. He has very little tolerance for people interfering with what he is doing or impeding progress. He moves much faster and much more efficiently than "committee speed."

Because we need great theologians who completely trust in the Spirit of God and remove their ego from the equation. We need preachers who trust God to save and don't work on their theatrical presentation in order to reach the rebel heart.

It seems that the music is often considered to be the worship in modrn churches. That is wrong, listening to the word of God is the worship.

People miss it because they just read Jesus into the subject (king, lover, etc.), but if you take someone that had no church background they would never come to the conclusion that the songs are talking about Jesus.

If a person does not recognize that The King in that song is Jesus, they have problems much bigger than the music they listen to.

I think the fact that musicians don't want to mention Jesus is a much bigger problem. Why is it so difficult to be specific in your songs, instead of using generic dribble. Do you honestly think that someone with no exposure to church is going to listen to that song in the OP and go "oh that must be talking about Jesus" No there is no way they would come to that conclusion from those lyrics.

Well given the song in question in the OP is Bethel that tells me all I need to know. It is not something I would ever sing, given how deep into NAR cult territory Bethel is. Worship and Theology go hand in hand in my book. I have no idea who Bethel is. I will Google them later. You do know that some of our classic and beloved church music was written by some people who were extremely backslidden when they wrote the music.
