Then why, do you think, did they ask Jesus if he was claiming to be the Messiah? Also, you said they did not hear - not that they heard and understood but did not believe.
There is a theme in John that Jesus’s “time had not yet come”.

Jesus was not publicly making the claim that He is the Messiah at that point. The Pharisees understood the implications of His teaching and ministry, as pointing to Him being the Messiah and were seeking to accuse Him of some impropriety and/or undermine His appeal among the people.

peace to you

John 10:24 “How long are You going to keep us in suspense? If You are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

Jesus' works and words plainly witnessed to Him being the Messiah. They saw. They heard. They did not understand.

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

To understand what someone is saying is not the same as believing what they are saying.

Jesus kept referring to God as His Father. They understood what He said, but didn’t believe it, thus they sought to kill Him because He claimed to be equal to God.

Jesus told them reason they didn’t believe was because they were not of His sheep. He did not say they didn’t understand what He said.

We are continuing to cover the same ground. I’ve made this point to you several times.

Peace to you
