Is Drinking Alcohol a Sin?

This is one of those issues that we will NEVER agree on. Numerous threads and posts have already shown that.

I guess my question is, did the SBC make a similar resolution about tobacco?

I would be tempted to say that this is borderline legalism if it wasn't straight up legalism. Now, I'm not sure it's a big deal as a group of believers to decide that they would prefer to abstain from alcohol. This, however, is another instance of a decision to be made and expected for all to follow in order to be "right with God". There is no sense in arguing against it, because although people may SAY that they don't believe it to be true, people's ACTIONS will adhere to this and look down on those who don't. In that case, another legalistic rule (call it the SBC's version of the Mishnah) to add on the SBC's list. This is not to say I don't think it isn't wise to abstain, but it isn't sinful for some to consume. (don't think i'm talking about getting drunk either, because i'm not)
In todays world, those on the Day of Penecost would be right today to say, those men are drunk!

Alcohol!!!

Can't you see that???!!!!??

I do see how someone could make that claim, but I think it makes more sense if you reverse it . . .

Alcohol
Al Cohol
Al Qohol
Al Qaeda

Much more logical IMHO. :tongue3:

I give a big "AMEN" to that saturneptune; God Bless you. I sure am glad to see there are others on here that feel Christians should abstain from acohol. Man, I was getting worried. Here I am in the Hills of Kentucky and we just don't believe in Christians drinking. We also have churches from Michigan to Fla. and no one among thousands believe in Christians drinking.

He said this:
Having said that, I would never speak for anyone else, or how the Holy Spirit deals with them. Is drinking a glass of wine with supper and stopping a sin for some people? Probably not, but that is for them to figure out, not the SBC.

I dont see how you got your opinion of what he said from that statement. He rightly placed the decision on each individual's own conviction.

Christ died to set us free, why do so many Christians want to stay in bondage?

Drinking alcohol is neither sinful nor unbiblical. Surely everyone has at one time taken cough syrup and other medicines that includes alcohol.

Years ago, it was deemed wrong for believers to consume alcoholic beverages. Not because it was alcohol, but because of its association. Christians were more conscious of what image they might send out if they were seen drinking alcohol and in particular the places where alcohol was normally consumed.

Try downing a beer or three and talking to your booze mate about the Lord Jesus and the change He makes in one's life.

That is my point...the rest is your choice. I made mine.

Cheers,

Jim

Wonder why they didn't want to be seen where they drink acohol?

Told my husband "They've got another alcohol thing going again."

His reply: "Wow, they must really love the stuff."

Wow, another alcohol debate.
Almost as bad as the Calvinism and Arminian debates.

There seem to be two sides to this argument.
The side that says "what does the Bible say" and the side that says "what does society say"

What does the Bible say:

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
(Isaiah 5:20)

And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
(Judges 9:13)

The sin is not in drinking or not drinking. The sin is making a law where there is no law. Making something to evil that is not evil.

So, the sin is when people put the word of society, doctors, statistics etc and make THAT higher than the law of God.
THAT is the sin.
