Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance
So........are you saying that you realize now that the Bible doesn't condemn all drinking, only modern society?

No............... Was in reference to others who think they are educated.

I see you are on here to attack me tonight Mr. Dale.

I repeat my question, given there are so many viable options for consumption other than alcoholic beverages, why would any Spirit filled born again believer in Jesus Christ possibly take part in something that is so misused and abused as drinking alcohol?

OK, you have moosh on the brain.

Alcohol is a sin in almost all cases.

I still do not know 'why' you are asking about it.

Oh, okay. Here you go... For those whose brain is moosh...

Recently the SBC voted to approve a resolution that affirms abstinence from Alcoholic beverages. There was 30 minutes debate on the floor of the convention back in June. Since then there have been repeated discussions over the value in making such a statement both for and against.

[skip the resolution...]

My question is this: is drinking alcohol a sin?

bla bla bla bla bla...

Alcohol, however, is an intoxicant. An intoxicant is a type of spirit that controls the user, not unlike a demon possession. That is why they call them spirits. I would object in the same way to someone taking an anti-depressant who is not clinically depressed. Why? Because anything that we attempt to gain fulfillment through that Christ otherwise could have given us is a form of idolatry.

Please stop making me repeat myself.

I am a born again Spirit-filled Christian and married to a wonderful Christian man.

He does not drink. I like an occasional glass of wine.

Why?

1. Because I was raised in that environment (and no, neither of my parents was a drunk!)
2. Because I like the taste of a smooth, dry wine.
3. Because we have friends who also enjoy an occasional glass of wine and when they are over I don't want to make them feel awkward. None of us has ever even been high -- at least not in the last forty or so years!
4. Because wine is a much safer relaxant for me than any medication.
5. Because God does not consider it a sin; in fact quite the reverse -- wine is a natural result of fruits. Noah made wine on purpose and he was a righteous man. Christ changed the water to wine (yeah, the real stuff! It rescued the groom from a possible lawsuit.) Paul told Timothy to have a little wine for his stomach's sake. Not grape juice -- wine.
6. Wine and beer have a proper place. The Bible warns about abuse, but not about use. In fact in a couple of places it suggests and condones use.

THEREFORE there is no way drinking wine is a sin! Man does not define sin. God does. If you choose not to drink an alcoholic beverage, God bless you. If you choose to have some occasionally, God bless you. If you overdo, I pray God corrects you.

You want something that breaks up marriages even more when abused but which was instituted by God? Sex.
Then, of course, there is money -- the love of which is the root of all kinds of evil.

Why not argue against both of those, too? Especially the latter, since man cannot serve both God and mammon and the warnings about that are especially severe.

But we have entire committees in our churched dedicated to money. There are pleas for money from most pulpits.

It seems to me a glass of wine is much safer than so much concentration on money...or sex! Both have destroyed the people and marriages involved with the poor use of them.

Because their FLESH likes it?
Same reason some saints gossip. Which by the way; I have heard that the word 'gossip' comes from the fact that the town news was usually heard in the local pub. If you wanted the latest you would go sip and get the news.

Don't know if that is true or not, but it is interesting if it is.

I like how some saints gossip. They call it a 'prayer request'. ha ha ha.

Folks will defend their pet sin.

Why are you so afraid of why?

What is your motive for the thread?

SBC Baptists have been against drinking for about a century that I know of . . . what changed to get you so upset?

In the old days, preachers got saved and called to the ministry after living a life of drunkenness and debauchery . . .

But, old timers did not 'ask' people to join an argument.

They simply said, "Drinking is wrong'.

The last 'Baptist' that I knew going into the ministry that got so uptight about alcohol had come from the methodists and was uptight that baptists did not let him change our theology to fit his needs.

So, what is your story?

I am not saying that being drunk is fine. It is not. But it is not a sin, either. And so much less, then, would be having a glass of wine with dinner.

Surely you jest. God's Holy Word says drunkards will not inherit the kingdom, so how can you say getting drunk is nat a sin?

I did not say anything about getting drunk -- unless you think an occasional glass of wine qualifies as being a drunk...

Best you do not read what is not there in my posts, OK?

That one glass of wine must be an awful big glass, Helen. You can't even remember posting that getting drunk is not a sin. I even quoted you word for word.

The etymology of the word gossip is a little more interesting than that. It is from Middle English godsip=> godparent; God + sib. "A person who chatters or repeats idle talk or rumors, esp. about the private affairs of others."

And yes, those of us who have been in a local tavern/pub, as well as church, can say there is about the same amount of gossip at each. In fact, anywhere people meet and have time to visit is a place of gossip-- coffee house, barber/beauty shop. court house benches, athletic stadiums. But where we are 'regulars' at regular times-- church, probably more than any of the others-- is where we expect it, mostly accept it, and connive to 'cover' it if necessary, as in a "prayer request."

Given there are so many viable options for consumption other than cake and pie, why would any Spirit filled born again believer in Jesus Christ possibly take part in something that is so musused and abused as eating junk food?

Given there are so many viable options for married couples to enjoy each others' company, why would any Spirit filled born again believer in Jesus

You get the picture...
