I replied to the second paragraph in another thread on multiculturalism. It seems appropriate here also (to me anyway).Originally posted by KenH:
"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...
There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." - Theodore Roosevelt, 1919

Even if you consider the life and safety of illegal immigrants to be less important than cockroachs', this will impact badly on legal Americans. If a girl from an illegal family is raped by a citizen, her family cannot complain to the authorities unless the family is willing to be arrested and deported - then the assailant gets off scot free as the girl will not be around to testify. If factory workers are routinely assaulted and robbed on payday by local thugs, once again, they cannot complain to the authorities lest they lose even more. Employers will be able to shortchange their employees or stiff them altogether and the employees will have no legal recourse. Eventually, the people will seek their own justice through vigilantism, gangs or their own private justice systems (organized violence). I think that is a move towards anarchy and away from civil order; a bad direction to go.Deny all federal, state, county, and city government public services to illegal immigrants except basic emergency needs during the duration of their custody.
That kind of defeats the idea of "public communications", if you actually do want to communicate to the public. Many legal citizens don't speak English - Puerto Ricans' native tongue is Spanish. The USA has never been monolingual since its inception. That also isn't very tourist-friendly.Make American English the sole official language for all public communications by all federal, state, county, and city government agencies.
I suspected this statement was inaccurate, so looked it up on the INS web site. Many legal citizens don't speak English - Puerto Ricans' native tongue is Spanish. The USA has never been monolingual since its inception. That also isn't very tourist-friendly.
I know people from Puerto Rico and other countries who are naturalized citizens, and they speak, read, and write English.Language
Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:
have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 15 years or more and are over 55 years of age;
have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 20 years or more and are over 50 years of age; or
have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.
I don't consider the life and safety of illegal immigrants to be less important than that of a cockroach! If a person needs emergency medical attention, protection from a violent crime, etc. we should provide it regardless of their status. I've already stated that many times. We do that for prisoners of war - our enemies bent on our destruction - so we should surely do it for illegal immigrants as well. We recognize the importance and righteousness of humane treatment of illegal immigrants, even while here illegally and a problem for us, and they certainly are not our mortal enemies in the sense that warriors of an enemy state would be. Nothing about our law authorizes nor condones mistreatment of people in any classification.Originally posted by Daisy:

If illegal aliens are afraid to seek healthcare, they become breeding grounds for more virulent forms of disease that could then spread to the legal population.
America did start out with three primary European languages of English, French, and Spanish as well German, Italian, and a host of "native" languages. But we quickly moved to English as the nation consolidated it's land and peoples. Even in Louisiana, a base of French standing for years, the language is American English. Even the immigrants in Acadina who arrived there from Nova Scotia who speak Cajun French today must now communicate in American English at the court house.Originally posted by Daisy:

I don't see the advantage of being hostile to other languages. In fact, we should be required to be proficient in at least one other language to be graduated from high school. The way we're going now, towards English only, we will be totally dependent on foreigners to translate everything for us, which may not be in our national self-interest.
Automobile insurance rates are also higher to cover the uninsured motorists problem resulting, in part, from illegal immigrants who don't have insurance in violation of state laws.Originally posted by LadyEagle:
Another reason our health care costs have escalated (I read somewhere the going rate for interpreters was $40 to $50/hr)

I couldn't help but notice these things have been made law during a Republican controlled Congress and Administration - you know, we've all been led to believe it's just the Dems who are for social programs.![]()
Today they're demanding that we accept the illegal immigrants in this country.Originally posted by The Galatian:
Dallas police say something like 500,000 to 300,000 Hispanics turned out for the rally in Dallas. The organizers asked everyone to wear white shirts for peace, and bring American, not Mexican flags.
It worked pretty well, with one arrest (for drunkeness) and a few people who threw plastic bottles at a small group of counter-protestors.
And there was voter registration information being handed out.
You're absolutely correct LadyEagle!Originally posted by LadyEagle:
Okay, does that mean that if American citizens break laws, we can get amnesty? In fairness, that's what it should mean if we are to have "justice" for all.
Obviously, our country does not abide by the Rule of Law any longer. What we have here, folks, is anarchy and the anarchists being patted on the head by those who make the laws.
Does this mean if we refuse to pay our taxes for several years, we will get slapped with no or low penalties for not filing? What if we all decide to work under the table for wages and not pay taxes? Will we be granted amnesty?
What we have is a government supposedly acting on our behalf signing our surrender to the UN and international big money interests who in turn are posing as societies benefactors while playing all sides against the middle (class) to increase and consolidate their own wealth and control.Obviously, our country does not abide by the Rule of Law any longer.
