I've had health care from my employer and from my wife's employer. But, when the crisis (wife losing job and me having diabetes and congestive heart failure) hit, I was already registered with the VA. Just because you register and keep it current, doesn't mean you have to use it. Call it belt and suspenders.

Alright! All that and Uncle Sam paid for it all. A European vacation these days is pretty expensive. I think there are less than 5000 US troops still in Germany.

At 179 bases, we have about 40,000 troops in Germany

Ok, your number is close to correct and mine wasn't. According to Time magazine there were still 37,704 US troops in Germany as of Oct 2015.

I served in the USAF, 1974 to 1978 as a Radio/Nav technician (328X0) and I have worked on the following aircraft: B-52's, KC135's, C-130's, and the F-4 Phantom's. Spent most of my 4 years overseas with time spent in Thailand, Okinawa (with TDY's to Korea and the Philippines). I went to tech school at Keesler AFB in Mississippi and was stationed there with the 7th ACCS (Airborne Command and Control Squadron) for a period of time afterward. I relished my time in the service and it was the best thing I could have done right out of high school. Thankfully there was no war going on, but we were always prepared just in case.
