I grew up in the Army as my father was a careerist. My life began in Japan. I retired from the Army in 2010 after 30 years of service. I had a few different MOSs. I started as a medic, then went miliary police, recruiter, back to military police, then military intelligence. I first enlisted in 1974 on a two year enlistment option. I got out, went to college, worked as a police officer, and went back in. I deployed to Saudi Arabia for the first Gulf War. I also deployed to Afghanistan (twice) and then Iraq.
My son retired three years ago from the Army. He was an 11B (Infantry). He also went to jump school. He deployed four times to Iraq. His first deployment In Iraq was during my first to Afghanistan.
After I retired, I worked for the Army as a civilian. I served as the Identity Intelligence Manager for ARCENT (3rd Army) until the BRAC closed Ft. McPherson and moved ARCENT to Shaw AFB in SC. I didn't want to make the move.
Do I miss the Army? I miss the camaraderie. I was glad when I retired because it was changing for the worst because of the politics in DC.
