We talk quite a bit about homosexual offenses. Let's deal with the heterosexual offenses that we have normalized.

What we watched?

Of the none sports/reality tv shows, are you watching the same things that non-Christians are watching?

How many Christians indulge in soap operas every day or read romance novels?

Wonder how many Christians watched Skyfall last year?Or any of the Twilight saga?

The list is just ridiculously long of the things of heterosexual fornication and adultery that we tolerate for the sake of entertaining ourselves.

How is it that we rationalize this behavior and will spend an inordinate amount of time engaged watching these things but it's spoken of rarely ever in comparison to our complaints about the homosexual offense?

I like to watch a few sports--just to see them hold their trophies up at the end of the season and hug and kiss it like as though they have done something that has eternal value---they are completely blind that they have done nothing and it all resets the next season and another trophy is given out

some Christians even worship the sports stars as being something great.
what does it really matter if one man can do some things with a ball that another man cannot ??

BUT the truth I wanted to get unto is that these men playing these sports --
Give all that they have to get to the championship series and to become the Champs for that year and hold the trophies high into the air.

But Christians do NOT give all they have unto their God in laying up store in heaven those things that CANNOT be corrupted nor stolen.

They go about their everyday lifes walking in the lusts of their flesh and building up treasure upon the earth which can be corrupted and be stolen and has NO eternal value.

The next question is--are the supposed Christians really saved that do these things ???

If you think Duck Dynasty is a bad example you apparently have not actually watched and know nothing about it.

Zaac,

Wish I could comment on those shows, but have never watched a one of them. My TV, little as it is, is limited to the History Channel, Discovery Channel, CNBC about five minutes a day for stock reports, and sometimes the SyFy Channel. From what I have seen just passing through a room with reality shows on during prime time, surely someone could find something better to do that get worked up over who can sing the best, dance the best, lose the most weight, swim the best, or can give away the most roses on a dating show.

It is a good point that this post has brought up, and definitely an aspect of our lives that we as Christians should examine. Nonetheless, we cannot allow ourselves to question another's salvation because they have allowed themselves to succumb to pastimes that may deemed questionable. In some cases, such as the television shows mentioned it is a question of morality. Concerning sports events, it is more of a personal conviction. In either case, it is not our place to judge these individual's salvation. That is God's place.

Well according to that list, in the OP, we should all just dig a hole and jump in for a couple of decades.

Honestly, I don't watch TV anymore. I tire of it all and am bored by the endless prattling of the poorly developed shows. Give me some of my old favorites on DVD (West Wing, Cheers, Psych, Flashpoint, Seinfeld, etc.) and I'll have a great day. :)

Old favorite shows left out:

I Love Lucy
All in the Family
Gunsmoke
Rifleman
Lone Ranger
Lassie

Now those were all great shows!!

Or any of the Twilight saga?

Where's the fornication and heterosexual sin in Twilight? Now, it's not my cup of tea and I've only read the first one because I saw a couple of student in my classes reading it at school.

I assumed the book was sexually explicit so I confiscated the book and told the girl who owned it that I promised to give it back in a couple of days. Well, I read the whole thing in two days and was BORED TO TEARS. It was just a bunch of puppy love junk.

Every time a new book came out or new movie came out and I knew that my students would be reading it and talking about it, I couldn't stomach another read, but I read the parent content advisory to ALL the films and read conservative reviews of the books which discussed any themes that might be objectionable to parents.

There is no fornication in these books/films. Yes, they have sex in the last book - but as a married couple and it isn't described in detail nor does the film show much detail. According to the sites I keep up with there is more objection to the violence than anything else.

I think it's a lousy series because it's so boring it's the SAME THING over and over and over ad nausem. But there's no fornication in it.

The list is just ridiculously long of the things of heterosexual fornication and adultery that we tolerate for the sake of entertaining ourselves.

I don't recognize the names of most of those TV shows, but I know that you must not have seen Duck Dynasty and must not watch too much NCIS if you think that they are entertaining us with sexual content.

How is it that we rationalize this behavior and will spend an inordinate amount of time engaged watching these things but it's spoken of rarely ever in comparison to our complaints about the homosexual offense?

As I said, I don't recognize the majority of the shows listed.

I didn't say that the latest "you got to watch this because you're a Christian" tv show is a bad example.

But no, I've never watched an episode.

So- how many of us have read Popular Mechanics? Popular Science? Woodworking, hunting, firearms, cross-stitching, hobby farming, or pretty much any other magazine?

What articles and/or advertisements did you see that qualify under the opening post?

My point being, where do we draw the line? And what does the line look like?

How about we draw the line in the same place that we do with homosexual fornication and lust?

If someone stuck an ad of two scantily clad guys making out in one of those magazines, some might have a conniption. But you stick two heterosexuals in there ding the same thing, and it gets brushed over and you keep right on going.

It's like us complaining about Will and Grace but not having a problem with either us or or kids watching Friends or Grey's Anatomy or The Walking Dead.

We often brush over the heterosexual fornication and lust while screaming bloody murder about the homosexual stuff.

The line is: "whatsoever is not of faith is sin."

Turn your eyes upon Jesus; look fully in His wonderful face; the things of earth will grow strangely dim; in the light of His glory and grace.

We have difficulty being in the world but not of the world. There are so many distractions for lust of flesh, lust of eyes and pride of life.

All of this stuff is going to melt with fervent heat. Then what?

Our biggest problem is not putting all on the altar of sacrifice. We hold something back, just in case. Consider Abraham's willingness to offer his son Isaac.

What now? Sell everything we have including high tech gadgets; give the money to the poor; follow Jesus.

Time to repent and do the first works.

Regarding the superbowl and such: see what Tertullian had to say many centuries ago: De Spectaculus.

Even so, come Lord Jesus.

Out of curiosity - what is it exactly you see wrong with "The Walking Dead"?

Don, you didn't add billboards along the route we must travel to go to work/church or play. You didn't add the magazine covers at the grocery store checkout, either. Nor the commercials and attire of the weather lady when we turn on the TV for 10 minutes to see the forecast.

"How is it that we rationalize this behavior and will spend an inordinate amount of time engaged watching these things but it's spoken of rarely ever in comparison to our complaints about the homosexual offense?"

Don, your point is well taken. Where do we draw the line? And what does the line look like? Do we stop driving to work/church? Do we stop buying groceries or turning on the TV for 10 minutes?

I *see*, in part what Zaac is saying. All sin is wrong. The keyword, IMO, that he used in the title of this thread, is what we are actually dealing with here. Forces today are trying to NORMALIZE "homosexual offense". One that hasn't been "normalized" in the past. If we cry out against removing the stigma associated with this particular sin, we are wrong. If we are wrong on this, then we'd be wrong about crying out against removing the stigma associated with child molestors. Simply because, on a given day, we are not as equally vocal about all other sins that two people can commit together.

For the record, I watch very little TV. Most of the shows mentioned, have never seen a single episode. Duck Dynasty is an exception. Have watched a couple of episodes. Have a huge stack of woodworking magazines along with the first 4 years+ of Mother Earth News. Many issues of Organic Gardening and other DIY books & magazines.

When I see a "suggestive" ad simply turn the page or advert my eyes if it's on a billboard. Change the channel or turn off the TV, radio, etc. Same thing applies right here, if a suggestive ad appears on this site. Just because I don't cry out with vigor doesn't mean that I approve. If any of these instances start attempting to "normalize" what HAS NOT been previously "normalized" I'll shout as loud as I can as far as my voice will carry in opposition.

That's one of my lines in the sand.

In Zaac's world Christians seeing and/or reading about heterosexual fornication and adultery is "normalizing" it. Apparently, if we Christians would simply quit observing these things happening in the world they wouldn't exist.

I'm a big Bond fan so I saw Skyfall. Trading sex for official secrets is a big part of spycraft. Does that mean I approve of it or am "normalizing" it in the real world? No. It's a part of the characterization of the players in the story. Now, I agree that constantly submitting yourself to storylines involving adultery and fornication via, say, soap operas will affect your spirit. These sorts of story lines exist primarily for the s@xual titillation.

I wondered that too. There were a couple sex scenes in 3 seasons. Its mostly trying to escape the zombie apocalypse.

There can be no doubt that TV and other media normalize what we understand to be sin. Not much we can do about it. However, I would suggest that you ask yourself if you would permit the kind of activity in your house that you are watching on TV. If not it would be a good idea to turn off the TV.

In Zaac's world, Christians need to shut up about homosexual fornication and lust if we're not going to make the same stink about the heterosexual lust and fornication that we've allowed to creep into our daily existences without complaint.

If you're sitting back and watching heterosexual fornication and lust and aren't making a big deal about it, then shut up about the homosexual fornication and lust. Be consistent. Be Holy or stop going off every time sinners sin.

Yet we've got a problem with homosexuals rationalizing their sin.
