Ever since the only time we've been broken into (the perps demolished the lock w/door with a crowbar (the perps were also relatives)), I no longer lock our's, ever. I do lock the gate at the entrance of the driveway though (case hardened lock & chain resistant to bolt-cutters). I remember many years ago I ran out of gas on the interstate hwy within sight of my exit (and fuel), locked my car and walked to get gas, when I had returned the wing glass had been broken out to gain access to the car (the only thing stolen was BIBLE TAPES from the glovebox!), so I would be hesitant to lock my automobile if that ever happens again.

Actually, I admire your refusal to live in fear, but because one chooses to secure their property or arm themselves doesn't make them cowards. IMO, someone needs to do it. Along with CCW comes a substantial liability and responsibility; it's not for everyone.

There was an 18 year old boy murdered in Charleston, SC just last week because he stopped in the wrong neighborhood! Shot 5 times!

Home invasions are becoming common in some parts of the country, we have had them in the small town where I live and people wind up dead. It would be nice to live where locks were not necessary but that is not the case. I lock my doors!

I neglected to say that we ALWAYS lock our doors at night when home; we just never lock them when we leave; what's the use? Our house is secluded, once 'down in here' they're outasight and can do whatever they want (after they deal with the Anatolian and German Shepherds ).

I don't care either way about right to carry or not. I'm pro gun ownership, pro property ownership (ergo; the right to protect it) and relatively conservative.

I lived on the edge of Baltimore city for years; gangs, drugs, theft an whatnot...never needed to use my guns. I did use my Bible though and did a fair amount of evangelizing to the thugs, as much as they would put up with at least. I always figured a gun would sort of "stifle" opportunity and open communication. A neighbor carried, he was the quintessential misanthrope, the bad dudes targeted him AND (or maybe because) they knew he carried. They treated us respectfully when we crossed paths or simply left us alone. I don't know exactly what I'm trying to say, but that was our experience in a horrible neighborhood. I hope that one day one of the seeds planted will sprout.

Oh! And what I find most interesting of all is that when "they" come for the guns (I have no idea who "they" are and what "their" timeline may be), who do ya' think they'll look for first? I always wondered why the self-sufficient, independent, gun-toting types were willing to give "them" access to so much personal information. I prefer to remain as anonymous as possible.

Right to carry helps protect the right to own property and all that entails. You won't have the right to protect your home, once you say you'll give up your right to ONE means used for protection.

Relatively speaking (at least in our state) the information given for a CCP is already public knowledge. Voting registration, driver's licence, jury duty, tax filings, etc. are examples.

Using a CCP to purchase a gun on the open market just speeds up the process. And it records the purchase of THAT gun only. It has no bearing on great grandpa's pea shooter tucked away in the rafters of the barn.

As to trying to be anonymous, I'm afraid that's a thing of the past, unless you live in the woods as a hermit and your nearest neighbor is 40 miles away. Even living the life of yesterday's mountain men is almost gone in the days of Google earth. And that's before the assistance that being forced to bear drones will provide.

Do you write checks or use credit cards for your purchases?
Do you have VIP cards from retailers?
Do you have a bank account?
Did you purchase an extended warranty on the last big ticket item you bought?
Do you have a fixed location for mail delivery?
Do you use an internet search engine?
Do you buy anything on line?
Did you register to vote?
Do you have a child in the public education system?
Have you attended classes, in the last few years, at a community college?
Do you ever pass through screening at controlled access points?
Have you ever been called for jury duty?
Do you ever take pets to a vet for treatment?
What about traffic tickets?
Do you get junk USPS mail and junk email?
Do you receive packages shipped via Fed-X or UPS?

Even those who work at trying to remain, even somewhat, anonymous these days have little success and will have less in the future. Databases containing personal information are growing rapidly and are being linked together.

FWIW, I am conservative and understand the need/desire to hang on to what little personal privacy we have left. However, after spending 17 years in the computer industry, some of which included the concepts of database design, there's very little personal privacy left for anyone, anywhere.

My paternal grandparents lived in southern WV and as a kid I spent many summers there. One trait I always liked very much in the mountain folk was they were very upfront and honest. I hope they are still the same. If they liked you they would give you the last biscuit on the table ... or in the house. If they did not like you you knew it and it was best to leave them alone. I always found them friendly. As a kid we usually carried a 22 rifle, not for defense against people but snakes.

This individual from Serbia is probably a fine man, but the Serbians were the ones who laid siege to Sarajevo and indulged in horrific acts of "ethnic cleansing."

During the siege of Sarajevo, Serbian artillery destroyed the apartment building where my great aunt lived (she was too old and feeble to go down to the shelter) and she was killed in the building collapse. So the Serbian army killed my great aunt, a citizen not a soldier. How noble of them!

The Serbs were most responsible for sowing terror in the former Yugoslavia, so I hardly think that his perspective is the most valid.

Just yesterday, I had someone tell me that "true Christians" are pacifists. I pointed out that "Christian pacifism" did not liberate my mother and her family from the Nazi labor camp in which they were imprisoned in early 1945, but rather the Red Army... an officially atheistic organization.

It's easy to be an armchair pacifist when there's nothing at stake, but when there's danger about and lives are at stake, it is good to have some options for saving innocent lives.

And remember, just because a person is carrying a firearm doesn't necessarily mean that their first choice will be to pull it out and shoot someone else. It is always a weapon of last resort.

Thanks for that dose of reality. Same thing I was thinking. For those who have ever gone on a cruise, it sure is comforting to have lifeboats there. We hope we NEVER have to use them, but I'm glad they're there.

I've heard one person say when asked of another, "Why do you carry a firearm?" And the answer was that it's a lot easier than carrying a policeman. What is the quickest that emergency services can get to your location - and what could happen in that amount of time?

I am glad this discussion has been respectful so far. Even though I do carry most of the time, I don't do so because I'm afraid. I do because I want to be prepared.

I am very discreet, so no one knows but my wife and two law enforcement officers that attend where I pastor. I have given them permission to carry while attending and have encouraged them to do so.

By the way, as I said in the above post, I hope I wlll never have to use the "lifeboat." As for my "sword," I carry it too!

A young man from Serbia earned his Ph. D. at the seminary. He was in the military during the war, escaped death narrowly ... but said he had not fear. He and his wife returned to Kosovo as missionaries. So, why are Americans so paranoid? I think because we have had it too easy and the military-industrial complex wants us in fear so they can gain big budgets from the government.

Kinda-sorta missed the point. When you register to carry (I've seen the form, filled it out even, never sent it in) the information aggregate is much greater, just saying. And it puts you on the gun ownership/user-ship map in much brighter colors than otherwise (my opinion only but there stats out there).

What follows is addressed in general not specifically to you, Oldtimer.

The argument that you want to "be prepared" or that you're carrying a tool, or the comparison to life boats and the other metaphors that run abundant in the preceding posts;

- Do you carry first aid kits on your person?
- Do you carry AED units on your person?
- What about common rescue medications?
- Do you carry an ample supply of water, food, clothing, shelter?
- Do you carry extra Bibles on your person to hand out when needed/required?
- Do you stop every time you see someone that needs aid?
- Do you feed the homeless and hungry when they ask?
- What do you carry with you to minister to widows and orphans?
- What do the sparrows worry about? The lilies?

Be prepared right? Have what you need at hand right? Don't get caught out without that all important "whatever" right? Or is it only a gun that satisfies the be prepared requirements.

This time, unlike my list of questions in the alcohol thread, I'm attempting to be more than a little rhetorical. But still and all, we love our right to bear arms, it makes us feel powerful, in control and able. I own guns, I just never felt the need to carry them around and I'd be happy to compare living situations to anyone. I ran my own business for two decades, carried loads of cash, moved through some of the worst areas Baltimore had to offer and still, never needed a gun.

I'm not condemning anyone's choice but I always find interesting what others set as high priorities. It's a fascinating discussion. And to be clear, if you ("you" meaning bad guys, most Baptites are welcome) illegally entered my home and threatened my wife, my hound dogs or maybe even me, I'd paint the walls with yer innards :thumbsup:
