I find this origin story for purgatory overly cynical. While I agree it lacks scriptural basis and likely arose from a desire to assuage human anxieties, its purpose is not entirely devoid of merit. The questions that drive it are one reason we need to communicate eternal justification.Purgatory is made up Catholic nonsense designed to terrify the unlearned into giving money to the church to ease the “suffering” of loved ones that have passed away. It is not taught in scripture, but is taught in pagan literature embrace by the RCC for that purpose.
It is a lie straight out of the mouth of Satan, given to Satan’s mouthpiece on earth (the pope) and his many demonic servants (paedo priests, bishops, cardinals)
Peace to you
The notion of a pre-Reformation "Roman Catholic Church" is inaccurate. Prior to the Reformation, Christianity existed primarily as a Western, semi-heterodox expression. The theological deviations introduced by this branch were significant. However, your characterization of this phenomenon mirrors secular critiques of religion in general.
Even if these doctrinal errors stem from sinful motivations and are perpetuated by institutions for self-serving reasons, they often address genuine human concerns. Catholics, acknowledging the possibility of losing salvation, naturally seek a theological framework that accommodates this anxiety. The concept of purgatory emerges as a potential solution to this existential dilemma.
