Jesus as the Surety of the New Covenant, shed His Blood for many, giving them remission of sins or forgiveness of sins by that means,
Matt 26:28
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
The word here remission is the greek word aphesis:
deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission.
From aphiemi; freedom; (figuratively) pardon -- deliverance, forgiveness, liberty, remission.

Cognate: 859 áphesis (from 863 /aphíēmi, "send away, forgive" ) – properly, "something sent away"; i.e. remission ("forgiveness"), releasing someone from obligation or debt
1. release, as from bondage, imprisonment, etc.: Luke 4:18 (19) (Isaiah 61:1f; Polybius 1, 79, 12, etc.).
2. ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν forgiveness, pardon, of sins (properly, the letting them go, as if they had not been committed (see at length Trench, § xxxiii.)), remission of their penalty: Matthew 26:28; Mark 1:4; Luke 1:77;
Their penalty of sin for them has been sent away
Now Lk 1:77 says this remission is Salvation
77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
Salvation here is in having had their sins remitted, forgiven by the blood of Christ. All who its true of, shall be given the Knowledge of it.
