Luk 7:36 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.
Luk 7:37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment,
Luk 7:38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.
Luk 7:39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner."
Luk 7:40 And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he answered, "Say it, Teacher."
Luk 7:41 "A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
Luk 7:42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?"
Luk 7:43 Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly."
Luk 7:44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
Luk 7:45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet.
Luk 7:46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.
Luk 7:47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little."
Luk 7:48 And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."

The above verse is an example of true godly repentance of sin. Jesus speaks of how much is forgiven. The "much" is in reference to the weight of sin which can mean a particular sin and the amount of sin. Whether it is true or not some see their own sin as being worse than others and sometimes more than others.

Jesus makes a reference to the amount of debt that is due. The debt being analogous of sin. This is never made more clear than in Romans 6:23 which tells us that our sin is a debt to God.

The main idea in Jesus story is that those who realize their sinful state and just how much debt (sin) they owe God (sinned against God) are the ones who love and appreciate God as they should. Those who do not ( much like the pharisees) have no real understanding of what God has done for them and cannot love Him.

We cannot come to God, through the cross and Christ, and not deal with our sin. We cannot come to the cross and not feel the weight of our sin. We cannot come to the cross and not feel the shame of our sin.

Who has come to the cross, has dealt with their sin can now move forward without repentance of that same sin. It is not possible.

We do not come to God because we love Him. That follows salvation. We do not get saved because we repent of sin. That is the result of salvation. No place calls for repentance of sin for salvation. That would be works salvation. Our repentance is exactly what scripture says and nothing less or nothing more. Repentance toward God.

Again that is a generic and vague phrase that needs context. Repent what toward God?

Again it is NOT generic or vague except to those who refuse to believe what it says and wants to replace it with their own belief or words. It is the repentance of our hearts/minds/will. Unregenerate man, by nature, does not want God as God requires. He may want what God offers, or what He can do for them, but not God Himself. It is an inward change that brings outward signs when accompied with faith.
The reason scripture never mentions repentance of sin in regards to salvation is two fold. One is it is works. The second is that a person can repent of sin (turn from sin) and still not repent toward God. Scripture requires the turing to God which is then placed on Jesus which is faith and the person is saved by grace.

We don't come to God because we do not love Him? I loved Him with everything within me before He saved me. I wanted Him more than my next breath. Please study John 3 deeper...especially Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus...

I am sorry but you cannot change facts. To simply say "we need to repent toward God" is vague and needs context. The word repent needs context.

Repent in what way? Repent of what?

Like I said those who reject what scripture says cannot understand it regardless how it is explained. Repentance f sin is what thew JW's Mormons, and every other cult teaches. God teaches repentance toward God. There is one hting for sure. God is not focusig on what we turn from like the cults, but Who we turn to.

Not possible to love God prior to salvation because the moment of love for Him means we are saved. To say you loved God prior to salvation is saying you were keeping the commandments prior to salvation. That is impossible. 1John 5:3. I assume you are confused about loving God and not just trying to win an argument knowingly making false staments. Wanting God is not loving God. You are confusing human emtions with devine intervention.

Actually the majority of Baptist churches teach repentance of sin. Jerry Fawell preached repentance of sin in salvation, Billy graham preached repentance of sin in salvation, Charles Spurgeon preached repentance of sin in salvation, Dr. David Jeremiah preaches repentance of sin in salvation. I could go on but you get the point. Which is your claim that repentance of sin in salvation is manufactured by cults is just plain false.

Christians love God and still break His commandments. Do you never break even one of them, Sister? If you do break even one, then my point still stands.....

It does not matter what someone or how many teach of something. What matters is what the scripture says. Any teaching that is contrary to scripture is false. I do agree that everyone that teaches a false doctrine is not a cult, but my point was that every cult does teach a works salvation based on the false teaching of repentance of sin for salvation.

It does not matter what someone or how many teach of soemthing.[sic]

I did not make a case based on numbers. In fact in fact I never mentioned numbers at all. I made the case that it is in error to assert that cults are the source of repentance from sin in salvation.

I also referred to those people because they are well repsected men and are considered experts in this area.

What matters is what the scripture says. Any teaching that is contrary to scripture is false.

On this we agree. The problem for you is that you have not prove that repentance from sin in salvation is contrary to scripture.

I do agree that everyone that teaches a false doctrine is not a cult,

Then maybe you realize your claim was not a good one.

but my point was that every cult does teach a works salvation based on the false teaching of repentance of sin for salvation.

So repentance toward God is not works but repentance of sin is? Am I understanding you correctly?

Yes you are understanding correctly. We are to work out our salvation, not work for it, (which we already have because of repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ) PHL. 2:12 and the repentance of sin is how we do it.

God has commanded all men everywhere to repent. (Acts17:30)

To turn to Christ, to trust in Christ, is to turn from self, and self is a sinful creation. Thereby, turning from self, turning to Christ, is repenting of your sins...

I understand repentance (in this thread's context) to be something that is twofold: 1. Rejection of the practice of sin., and 2. Acceptance of Christ as the alternative.

No it does not say turn to Christ. Acts 20:21 gives exactly what must be done and the repentance is to turn to God. Not turn to Christ or turn from sin, but turn to God. In the end it depends on if you believe thta God means what he says annd says what He means or to believe what someone adds to scripture.

Than according to scripture you understand incorrectly. Do that and you lose your soul. Why do you think Jesus said many are called but few are chosen. Also many will say Lord, Lord only to hear "I never knew you"? They are very religious and all believe in Jesus according to Mat. but they are still lost.

They had their own brand of repentance instead of doing it God's way. It is called the burgerking mentality or the spirit of Cain.

WHOA! PUMP THE BRAKES. Turn to God and not turn to Christ?!?!? Do you believe Christ IS God? Sure sounds like it, but I'll let you explain.....

BTW, Christ IS God...
