Should Christians STRONGLY support the 2ND AMENDMENT?

I believe the 2nd Amendment should be upheld by all christians, unless of course our goal is Socialism, Anarchism, (etc..) we ougt to use arms to protect our selves and our children lets not forget those "idiots" behind the 2nd Amendment are the reason why you can even call your selves Baptists today, Im not saying not love your enemies I am however saying don't suffer your enemies to violate your human rights the Bible says to punish murderers, plain and simple I don't see any of you jumping up and down abou that. And besides I don't need a gun to kill anyone I only use it because it's conveniant and a whole lot less messy trust me folks all you need are your two hands to kill some one are we going to rally in front of the white house for hands to be outlawed? there is no where in the Bible where killing in self defense is a sin as a matter of fact the Bible commands us "Baptists" to let every one be persuaded by there own opinion.

I'd just as soon keep my guns. I'm a member of the NRA and while I don't agree with every thing they support, I believe the constitutional framers intended for us to be able to defend ourselves and our families. In fact, I think our minute men defended themselves and their new counrty with their own weapons.

Amendment II is not solely about gun ownership. It is about the right to keep and bear arms in accordance with a well-regulated militia.

Baptists should support all of the Constitution. We can disagree with parts of it, or interpretations or applications thereof, but we have a responsibility to support it nonetheless.

Hey I just put up the verse . I think He says to get one as the fact that it might be needed. I think the ammendment is for the same thing. Hard to defend against a sword with a fist. Some things are woth fighting for.

No not to avoid persecuton. But to avoid murder, rape, and slavery. What would you advise the Sudanese Christians to do?????

I'm just saying that we have the right to self defense. Self preservation is written into our very genes by God himself. I have no problem with your reluctance toward violence. That is a good thing, but to push an absolute injunction in all circumstances. That seems to go to far.

I'm just looking for how we reconcile what Jesus said with the attitude of "kill 'em before the get us."

No one has done that yet, instead we have just posted justifications fighting of persecutors when Jesus says to rejoice when we are persecuted.

How can we rejoice in persecution, how can we pray for those who persecute us, when we are arming ourselves to kill them?

C4K's post made me realize that scripture permits self-defense when one's life is in immediate and imminent danger. However, it does not require it, going so far as to praise the person who allows oneself to be persecuted (though likewise not requiring persecution).

Somewhere along the line, we got this notion that self-defense is somehow required, and that anything else is wimpiness.

I haven't quite reconciled all of that myself.

I know that as a general rule I support self-defense and defense of others. I don't see that there is any virtue in sitting around while others are suffering. For instance, I'd like to think that if I happened upon a woman being attacked by a stranger, I'd try to do something to help besides just calling the police.

I think that the "turn the other cheek" principle applies more to when we are under organized persecution specifically for being Christian, and not when a PCP-crazed ex-con breaks in and tries to beat us to death with a baseball bat.

And even in cases of organized persecution I think I would use lethal force to protect my family if it came to that.

Oh, and personally, I've armed myself to go target shooting :D , although when funds permit I would like to arm myself to protect against criminals.

Doc Cassidy nailed this one.

The 2nd Amendment was seen as a deterent to government excesses. It was seen as an assurance of the rights, liberties, and individual sovereignty that was recently won. BAPTISTS mostly supported and fought for the rebellion.

I would say that fighting for a principle such as assuring that all men retained their God-given rights and were able to worship according to their own conscience is probably reconcilable to the scripture. Certainly our Baptist forebearers thought so. The Revolution was largely born in pulpits.

BTW, there is statistical as well as anecdotal support for the assertion that the more guns law abiding citizens keep in their home, the less crime a community has.

I can assure you that where I live a theif would ensure that no one was home before trying to break in. I doubt there is a single house without a gun. We have a pistol (that I didn't want but makes my wife feel secure when I am gone), a 22, 270, 7mm WSM, 20 gauge, and a 410.

Our weapons are for hunting and target practice. But it does give me a warm and fuzzy feeling that government has to respect my ability to resist their encroachments upon my rights.

OTOH, we are the proverbial frog in a slowly heated pot right now... are rights aren't being seized just "progressively" eroded.

I think a good balance is to see "turning the other cheek" as a noble thing, and to strive for it with all your might. But I would not rule out using deadly force if I were a sudanese Christian and the gov forces were comming for my daughter.

My personal opinion is this. One way or another criminals will always have guns. They'll steal what they can't buy. So why should we noncriminals give up our only protection? It's not like we are going out brandishing them and threatening people with them. We are using them to protect ourselves - and for those people who like to hunt, to hunt. So I think we should stand for our right to bear arms.

That's my opinion for what it's worth.

Besides... if God doesn't want us to have them, He'll let us know. I have learned God will let you know when you are doing something you shouldn't.
