Should Christians take political sides?

Does taking political sides as a Christian alienate those of opposing political views from Christ? Do we misrepresent Christ by claiming to be Liberal, or Conservative? Do we alienate nations from Christ and increase persecution of fellow believers when we support one foreign nation, Israel etc., above another?
I have found that aggressively pushing politics alienates many people I am trying to witness to. I was going to stop doing that but decided that the moral issues connected with the Trump Presidency were so great I had to speak out on them. My twin brother who is a Baptist minister feels the same way I do but made the decision not to push politics to avoid this njegative impact on evangelism.

I think the religious right contributes to the Progressives writing off Christianity in general. But if you show them a different Jesus, I would say, a more biblical Jesus, you might get somewhere. I have an acquaintance who runs in Progressive circles. But he knows I'm consistently pro-life, that is, anti abortion, anti war, anti capital punishment, and in this alone he sees a huge difference between me and those he's accustomed to attacking. He goes out of his way to visit. And goes out of the way to avoid politically affiliated Christians.

You are not an Evangelical, are you?

I try not to mention President Trump in a religious context because of the issues about character surrounding him. But I can still speak out against the sins of both parties objectively as a member of the Kingdom of God.

No doubt, but Evangelicals knew that Trump was a playboy before the election, as you know. No one likes Hillary and she has a record of corruption and lying as well as helping her husband cover up his rapes that makes her more immoral than Trump.

In the 1950s Christians said that politics was a dirty business and that a Christian should stay out of it. Since then, the thinking has been, in my opinion, that a Christian should be involved in politics but it is still a very dirty business. I think that politics has always been vile in the USA since I visited the spot in Plainfield, Indiana, where the political opponents of Martin Van Buren wrecked a stagecoach in 1842 in order to dump him in a muddy road even though he was out of office.
If we tie Jesus to a political party, the party will always misrepresent him. He said his kingdom is not of this world. And told us to remain separate from the world.

So what do you care what Evangelicals do?
Every "group" misrepresents Christ more or less. Denominations divide the body and are man-made. So I treat all fairly according to what I see. And all matter because people receive distorted views of Christ through them.

Well, as you know, you have only attacked Trump and Evangelicals here so I think that you have made your point when you reply with the above statement in relation to the corruption and lies and immorality of the Clintons, unless you consider rape better than adultery?

I'm not being biased. Had Hillary won, her name would replace Trump's as the topic of discussion. I believe she is worse than Trump. Just as I believe Obama was worse than both... But I do not mix Jesus into politics since it misrepresents him.

So you still criticize Trump and Evangelicals for not voting for Hillary over some past adulteries of Trump, which everyone knew about years and years ago. Evangelicals had no choice.

As for 1689Dave, his choice is #NeverTrump. Just think, Sir, you have six more years to post along these lines. :Thumbsup

I'm sorry but I don't understand what this has to do with Christ.

If you believe in total depravity, then no human being is worthy of being President, huh? Politics will always be a dirty business in America because the majority of Americans will always be non-Christians. When the primary race came to me in Indiana, I did not vote for Trump, but in November 2016, I voted for Trump because Hillary was a lying crook who helped her husband cover up his rapes.

Evangelicals did what they could, but majority rules. The #NeverTrump folks have mostly migrated to the Democrat Party. Chances are that Trump will not have a primary challenger in 2020 and will be nominated again to oppose someone like Maxine Waters or some other pro-choice leftist so once again Evangelicals will have to do whatever they can.

So your disdain for Evangelicals for not joining you in #NeverTrump is easily refuted in by merely stating that Trump advertised his playboy lifestyle for years and everyone knew about it so you are dwelling on old news, and you probably have six more years of voting Democrat ahead of you and throwing things at Evangelicals for another six years. Too bad for you. You really should examine your doctrines rigorously and consider becoming an Evangelical. Sooner or later, you will discover that #NeverTrump is a dirty business, also.

I don't think you understand me or Evangelicals. I voted for Trump and most of the people I know are Evangelicals. I do not know one among them who is a Democrat.

That said, I do not associate Jesus with political rulers. It would be like the Israelites associating YHWH with the Canaanites.

Why would you vote for Trump and then spend all your time trying to have him impeached? Do you think that that is moral? Why didn't you just abstain?

Who said I was trying to impeach Trump?
If you hold Trump accountable for anything, you will be attacked as someone with "Trump Derangement Syndrome", accused of "hating" Trump, trying to have Trump impeached, or a partisan Democrat.

There is no room for integrity or critiquing the President in the minds of his most zealous enablers.

So far, Trump has done very well. Evangelicals had no choice in November 2016 except Trump. Hillary had made it clear that she disliked Evangelicals and that she was vehemently pro-choice. I don't know why you would vote for a person and then attack them all the time. I never saw a Democrat attack Obama for anything.
