Sola Scripture? Part Two

If this hasn't been posted, I think it is quite valuable so members of the RCC can quit trying to force their definition of sola scripture on us protestants.

WHAT SOLA SCRIPTURA IS NOT


1. First and foremost, sola scriptura is not a claim that the Bible contains all knowledge. The Bible is not a scientific textbook, a manual on governmental

procedures, or a catalog of automobile engine parts. The Bible does not claim to give us every bit of knowledge that we could ever obtain.


2. Sola scriptura is not a claim that the Bible is an exhaustive catalog of all religious knowledge. The Bible itself asserts that it is not exhaustive in detail
(John 21:25). It is obvious that the Bible does not have to be exhaustive to be sufficient as our source of divine truth.


3. Sola scriptura is not a denial of the authority of the Church to teach God's truth.


4. Sola scriptura is not a denial that the Word of God has, at times, been spoken. Rather, it refers to the Scriptures as serving the Church as
God's final and full revelation.


5. Sola scriptura does not entail the rejection of every kind or form of Church "tradition." There are some traditions that are God-honoring and useful in the Church.
Sola scriptura simply means that any tradition, no matter how ancient or venerable it might seem to us, must be tested by a higher authority, and that authority is
the Bible.


6. Sola scriptura is not a denial of the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding and enlightening the Church.

Sola Scripture means that the scriptures are the final authority. Now I have heard Sola Scripture folks disagree on whether everything we do should be
specifically stated and those who think what we do should not contradict scripture. I have never heard of a church that does not advocate preaching and teaching.

the only group that I have ever heard of that just reads scripture and leaves it at that is the Christian Science church, albeit they also use Ms. Eddys book as well.


To summarize, the Bible is the final authority, that groups disagree about what it says, is no different than the fact that groups disagree with what Catholics contend
is Truth, Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Splinter groups or divisions do not disprove truth. If they did, Catholics and Sola Scripture advocates are in the same boat.
Both have groups that disagree with what they say.

Not all Sola Scripture adherents claim that individual interpretation is the final authority. Many groups, adhere to the authority of the New Testament offices such as elders,
deacons, and bishops and them using scripture as THEIR final authority.


Sola Scripture advocates believe that Bible is the final authority by which Christ and the teachings of the Apostles can be accessed. Do you have some words or
information from the Apostles that are not in the Bible and can be proven to come from them?
