Probably not. We would have had war then. Dealing with a nation with as many nukes as Russia has, and the advanced delivery systems they have, is definitely not simple.
Our nuclear arsenal is outdated compared to the new Russian systems. We have known it for quite a while, but have done very little to fix it.

Speculation based denial of the obvious. We are not in a nuclear exchange now and so the speculation has no basis in fact. We know how dictators behave, they blackmail, bully and attack the weak. Was Mr. Kennedy wrong to blockage Cuba? Did the Iran's fold when Mr. Reagan took office? Did the Korean Conflict suddenly end when Ike took office. How many examples do you need? I have lived under the threat of annihilation from nuclear advisories from the 1950's. There is no "safe" solution, but everyone should know appeasement is not a solution.

It’s a good question because the opposition Ukraine is putting up is drastically different and I don’t think the U.S/NATO/EU would have been quite as United at that time. We were also still mired down in OEF and OIF.

OIF = operation Iraqi freedom (was with Iraq)

You may be correct that US/NATO/EU would not at that time been willing to go whole hog, but the question dealt with what if they did. If they could have foreseen the subsequent action by Russia based on our feckless response?

Iran had no nukes.
The reporting of the Cuban missile crisis is more myth than fact. First fact is U.S. started it by placing nukes on Soviet border. Second fact is the Russian fleet never got anywhere close to the blockade. Third fact is that no one knows if the U.S. fleet would have engaged the Soviet ships had they not turned back. The fourth and most important fact is that The USSR actually won the show down. We pulled back far more missiles than USSR did.

Putin wants Ukraine. Let him have it. In return, we should demand guarantees from Russia that they will not intervene in any way when we bomb Iran back into the stone ages and when we dessimate N.Korean nuclear program.
