Starting a Men's ministry

Our church does not have an active mens ministry. I am interested in starting something like Promise Keepers but I have heard that Promise Keepers is not a theologically sound organization.

I would be interested in hearing about some of your men's ministries and any advice you may have. I am not a pastor or deacon but just a motivated Christian and want to keep that going.

What about getting together for prayer and encouragement and then you guys maybe find a book to work through together?

I agree about meeting for prayer and Bible study, but you might want to think about having a work ministry involved. Our men's Bible study is growing, but they have more work projects for widows in the church and in our neighborhood. Men want to DO something and do it together.

I'm all for ministries. What would be the purpose of this men's ministry?

The purpose would be to just bring the men of the church together to stay motivated in serving the Lord, as accountability partners, support groups, what have you. I'm thinking of something allready established like Promise Keepers (That is the only thing I can think of). Our church is beginning to really grow and I think this is needed.

Honestly? I don't really care why men hate going to church (by the way, the reason men hate going to church is because they're unregenerate. There, I just saved you all the price of the book.) and I don't really care what "works" because I don't base my ministry or my church on pragmatism.

My concern is, is it Biblical?

I applaud your enthusiasm, but the problem with these kind of groups is that they end up either promoting moralism or social gathering.

I used to be heavily into PK and several other groups, until I realized that they weren't Biblically based.

If I were you, I'd go to itunes, download Voddie Baucham's sermons on manhood (there are dozens of them, all free) and listen to them. I think he's right on Biblically and you might get some good ideas for your group.

If it were me, what I would concentrate on is matching men up with older saints for mentorship.

Your concern ought to be is it biblical. What is the percentage of men to women in your church? Why? Most pastors will say that if it were not for the women nothing would get done. That is because the pastor is not leading.

Any church that is a program oriented church is not biblical.

If you read the book then you may be able to better understand what Jesus taught in Luke 18:22, "When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

Depends on the program. We have several teaching, training, discipling, mentoring, and evangelistic programs. I'd say they're pretty Biblical.

I already understand it. I just disagree with the way liberals apply it.

Show me from scripture where a program is biblical or give an example of a program from scripture.

Yes I am.



Jesus sending the Disciples out, the creation of deacons, elders training young men for ministry, older women training younger women, etc.

The funny thing is that while you keep demanding that I show you examples, you haven't named one thing that we're doing that's not consistent with scripture.

If you don't like the fact that we do these things, tough.

Either show us from scripture how we're doing them wrong or mind your own danged business.

Do you know how to do a search to be able to look at the things someone has posted in the past?

I asked you to show how any program was biblical. Show just one verse in scripture where that is a program. Programs are a modern invention of the dying church in America and suggesting it is the answer to growth. Where does any program fit in with the totality of what Jesus taught in Mt. 28:19, 20 and how Jesus taught his disciples.

Jesus did not just teach at just the cognitive level.

Jesus did not run his disciples through a program like a car goes through a car wash and out the end comes a clean car. That is the way too many churches deal with their congregation.

People reach people. People are not programs.

When a person comes to church they see what Christians do and assume that is what being a Christian is all about. When they meet in a small group they may open up some. When you meet with them personally then they begin to open up more. When you meet with them personally and help them grow in their areas of struggle then they see what scripture says and see their responsibility. Show me one program anywhere that does the same thing Jesus did with His disciples in teaching them to do everything He commanded.

What program did Jesus lead?

What program did Paul lead?
