No, it was the call that made him alive.
Of course they are living - but they are dead in sin. Sin has dominion over them so that they cannot live until that dominion is broken.

In the Gospel according to St John, who is unable to hear, and why? Does Romans chapter 11 answer this? Also does Romans chapter 11 tell us whether the deafness/blindness will be permanent, or temporary?

    Read the passage Bob.

Is it really that hard to see? The bones did nothing, till God acted. There were other bones in the earth...they remained put...for God did not make them alive.

I'm sure this is toward a Calvinist. Post the passage and I'll reply if you wish.

Come on James, I am reading the passage. You even ask for an "Amen" because God makes the dead bones hear, hear you said James, not me. If you misspoke is one thing but you did say "dead bones hear".

Romans 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying,
3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded
8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.
11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?
13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
    17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.
24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.
29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.
32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

    1...bones are there.
    2..Bones are dead.
    3..dead bones cannot hear.
4..God said.."Prophesy over these bones and say to them, 'O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD"
    5...Bones can now hear.
6...Bones can now hear this.."Behold, I will cause breath to enter you that you may come to life"

    in short order again...

    dead...
    God decrees to hear...
    bones hear and have life.

    This is salvation

The bones out of the valley that were not made to hear...did not hear...and did not have life. The hearing(understanding) is given 1st by God to the dead that do not understand...then...and only then can life come

    who was He talking to?

    John, chapter 5

"28": Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

I think they can hear Him James!

Nevermind, James, I think it is pretty clear. I have read the chapter 3 times in the last 20 minutes. If you are too lazy to read it, nevermind.

Maybe later I'll edit the post to highlight what I see. Now I have to go to the store for milk.

    Hello Bob,

The text one verse at a time...
The order as it is thoughout the Bible..
    1) hear
    2) believe
    3) goes from DEATH into LIFE.

Notice the words..."is coming and now is".
By saying this, we must understand there was a time before this coming. In other words...

Time A was before when it could be say..."a hour is coming".
Time B is the hour of the coming...and therefore it can no longer be said..."a hour is coming"...for that hour has come.

    What is coming?
    1) A time (hour/age) when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son.
    2) Those that hear shall live.

So it goes without saying..thought I will say it...

    1) Time A no dead heard, therefore no one was given life so they are still dead.
    2) Time B all that hear are given life and are no longer dead.

    So we ask...

    1) Are all men going to heaven?
    2) If all men are not going to heaven...then...all men do not hear....right?

    James;
    There is a inner man
    There is a outer man
When we are born again it is because the inner man heard the voice of the Lord and believed and was made alive in Christ Jesus.
That is what it is talking about when it says "the hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear (Spiritual ear) shall live. That is why when one of the Apostles said "let me tarry that I may bury my father", Jesus said let the dead bury the dead. In other words let those who are dead in sin bury those who have died the physical death.

Marvel not at that for the body shall live again also for "the hour is coming when all that are in the grave shall hear His voice and come forth and unto them that have done good the resurrection of life and unto them that have done evil the resurrection of damnation. Notice James that "all" that are in the grave, both the saint and the sinner, and they surely are dead for they have returned to dust or at least most of them have.

If the "dead" can't hear the Lord then there will be no resurrection.

Creation did not here God and then move toward creation. God says it, it happens, no hearing neccesary.

Inanimate obects, including the dead, cannot "hear"

I don't think you would deny the scripture would you PETE?

    John, chapter 5

You ought to finish the sentence. Will those in the grave get to choose whether to come out?

You've still not shown a single instance where one who is dead can hear the voice of God and choose to remain dead.

    Bob...

This is very easy. read the next verse...

25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

    If you hear...you shall live.

Do all men that hear the gospel go to heaven?

If not then it is talking about the group that is made to hear...and then lives. Just like in the valley of the bones.

    James, Hello brother.

Umm, you aren't really suggesting that bones are dead are you? lol!
I guess that would make rocks alive for it the people of Isreal had had proclaimed the "rocks" would have cried out. :BangHead: All kidding aside...

Your main problem is consistancy here. If these bones are representitive of our 'dead' spirit. Then that same dead spirit that is as lifeless as those dry bones would be no worse off in Hell as in the grave since there is no life in it away. The spirit is not dead as you see in Lazarus and the Rich man and as we also know that the spirit of man . Was the Rich mans spirit dead from birth but at death revived to live forever in torments.
Of course not, but was dead in contrast to the life of God just as it is contrasted as being darkened in comparision of the light of Chrst. How can a dead spirit be darkened in understanding as says the scriptures unless dead does not mean lifeless. It simply is metaphorical in its application of one outside of the convent relationship of God in Christ both the Light and Life.

Now if you agree that the spirit of man is not dead in the most literal sense then we can at least find a common ground here.

Well, you are admitting that the dead can hear by keeping quoting this verse. You just don't know what it means when it says dead.

Again, if the dead can't hear the voice of the Lord, there will be no resurrection according to the scripture. "The hour is coming when all in the grave shall hear the voice of Jesus and come forth".
