The OT Jews shared in two covenants. The Abrahamic covenant of circumcision and the Mosaic covenant of the Sabbath. So jews were jews before jesus came, and after He came, now the lost ones are gentiles?
Jesus abolished both on the cross because the underlying purpose of both was to produce a people through which the Messiah would be born. Having fulfilled their purpose, God abolished both covenants.
If you recall, Abraham's covenant seed consisted of one of his offspring, Ishmael, and over 300 servants and their families. All of these became Abraham's covenant seed through circumcision. Any not circumcised were cut off and remained gentiles.
When Jesus abolished circumcision on the cross, all of the covenant seed before the crucifixion died off in that 40 year generation or mostly perished in Jerusalem's destruction. Most of Paul's ministry to the Jews and their persecuting him took place in this transitional period as he worked to move them into the New Covenant.
Beyond calvary, circumcision lost its significance and remained an empty ritual. Nothing remained to make one Abraham's covenant seed.
But Israel was also a mixture of family and gentile converts, believers and unbelievers. Paul says for the family's sake God will save a remnant.
“So in the same way at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if it is by grace, it is no longer by works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.” (Romans 11:5–6)
“What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was diligently seeking, but the elect obtained it. The rest were hardened,” (Romans 11:7)
“I ask then, they did not stumble into an irrevocable fall, did they? Absolutely not! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make Israel jealous.” (Romans 11:11)
“Now if their transgression means riches for the world and their defeat means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full restoration bring?” (Romans 11:12)
“Granted! They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but fear!” (Romans 11:20)
“And even they—if they do not continue in their unbelief—will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.” (Romans 11:23)
“For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. And so [in this way] all Israel [Jew and Gentile followers of Christ] will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion; he will remove ungodliness from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them, when I take away their sins.”” (Romans 11:25–27)
