Nice dog, Jim! A coincidence...we just took in a stray, too. Got his shots yesterday and he's doing fine. Looks like mostly a Black Labrador.

Anybody looking forward to a special or traditional New Years Day dinner?

Our family always has a nice buffet type meal for New Years Eve followed by a day of football watching, Blackeyed Peas and Collard Greens (usually have pork or ham) for New Years Day. I have a big pork roast for Saturday this year.

Being Pennsylvania Dutch, we have no choice. It HAS TO BE pork, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. I look forward to that meal as much as any all year.

But...if you mail me some of those collard greens, I'll sneak them onto the table.

Sheila and all, Here is another photo of "Buddy". She is adapting well. Now taking her out without a lead, but not with the other dogs..that may take awhile.

Good on you, Jim..There is nothing more rewarding than befriending a pet in need.

She really is lovely, Jim. Our son, Jon (28) wants a dog but I cannot convince him to get one from the animal shelter. He wants a tiny pup that hasn't been mistreated while I will always adopt at the shelter. If my Jim would have allowed it, I would have come home with two or three older cats as well as Patches.

Hi Diane, I am not allowed to visit the local shelter unattended...I would bring the whole shelter home...and sometimes I think I did. We have had as many as 9 dogs at one time, plus three horses, and even rescued an injured racoon off the roadway. I am terrible when it comes to animals.

This dog just begs for attention and does everything to please.

I love the picture. Thank you. She is a beautiful looking dog. Rob says I am not allowed to have anymore pets after Leo. Although we adopted Leo, he didn't get as far as a rescue shelter. I did visit a shelter just before we had Leo. There were so many dogs in need of good homes. I can't imagine a home without a dog.

Sam goes back to work tomorrow night, so I am on my own for New Year. I doubt I will get much sleep as the people round here tend to go O.T.T. with the fireworks and poor Leo likes them even less than I do.

Oh I know what you mean Jim! I kept taking cats out of the cages and walking around loving on them. It broke my heart to not take this one old fella names Goliath. He was HUGE. He was also 8 years old. My Jim is actually allergic to cats so I'm blessed to have the one. He believes long haired cats don't affect him so....

Sheila, Jim says we may be the only normal people on this end of our street. It'll be quite hard for us to sleep at all tomorrow night too. Even little children will be out running the streets!

Actually, short haired dogs have given my rather nasty asthma attacks in the past. One of our friends at church keeps budgies, (no idea why) and I always end up coughing quite badly when I go there.

Never wanted birds as pets. Prefer to see them free.

I wonder, Sheila, if the longer hair keeps the dander under control. We did have two cats in Connecticut but back then I vacuumed EVERY day and had Merry Maids every two weeks also. Jim and I worked out of the house and the kids were all 18 and older..... The one cat was short haired but it never seemed to bother him.

Maybe Diane, I really don't know. Fortunately, poodles don't shed like other dogs. We never had a problem with either Cassie or Tumble either.

IF we could have afforded a puppy, the one Nick wanted was non allergenic.

Don't come to my house. We could weave a rug a week from the hair we comb out each day. Mary has asthma, but the dogs have never troubled her. Nothing bothers me.

Poodles are good for people with allergies, or so it is said.

I've recently read, Jim, that having cats especially but dogs also as a young child can help prevent asthma as an adult. We always had dogs when I was a child. I have only mild reactions to leaf mold and grass pollen which both give me sinus conditions but never have had any wheezing, etc.

Our Dubbs sure did shed the last few years of his life. Everytime you touched him, your hands were covered.

I actually know of someone who made a jumper for her husband from dog hair. I think she even wove the hair into yarn herself.

I bet it was a very warm sweater too, Sheila. I'm always amazed when we see photos of polar bear and their cubs playing in the snow, oblivious to cold that would kill us. God is amazing, is He not?

Polar bears are the most vicious bears on earth. They sure look playful and cuddly, but don't kid yourself. They will even track a man down in the north country.

I've read that about Polar Bears Jim! They are so gentle with their young and to watch them play, one would never guess!

LOL, no Jim, he was the husband of my needlework teacher. I don't know what he did, but he wasn't a pastor. My old needlework teacher and I still keep in touch.

It was military law, when I was stationed at CHurchill, Manitoba, to carry a firearm when we went to supper. This was because the Polar bears entered the camp at that time and we were commanded to shoot to kill. Our windows were boarded and our doors had bars on them. They would break into the huts.
