Wow, I disagree completely. This nation is becoming fatter by the minute and long term health complications are popping up all over the place. Watch "super size me"... that guy simply eats at McDonald's every day and winds up with lots of health issues including serious liver problems within a month. Is that not a poison? How can it not be??? Alot of people would be absolutely shocked if you actually sat down and intelligently thought about what you are putting into your bodies.

How about KFC? Have you ever studied the amounts of cholesterol, sodium, and calories that you are consuming with a 3 piece meal?

How about hot dogs and bologna? It has sodium nitrate in it, which can give you cancer. If you don't believe me ask my grandfather who has always loved his daily bologna sandwiches and now has rectal cancer which has spread to his liver. Is this not a poison?

Soft drinks? You can dissolve an entire 10 penny nail in Coca-Cola. Need I say more?

How about the Adkin's diet? The very thing that these dieters are checking for to ensure success is a poison that your body is trying to flush out. You cannot burn protein as a main energy source then pack your colon full of nothing but rotten animal flesh and not expect alot of poisons to be in your blood. This is absolutely horrible for your kidneys and it promotes colon cancer.

I'm sorry, but you can do ALOT more damage to your body by eating seemingly normal food regularly than you can by drinking a small amount of alcohol on an infrequent basis, so yes, food CAN be a poison. Actually, numerous studies have shown that small amounts of alcohol can prevent heart disease, and red wine and dark beer is packed full of antioxidants which can slow some byproducts of aging and prevent cancer. Mild drinkers as a group are actually living longer than both non-drinkers and heavy drinkers due to this.

Just remember that you can in fact dig a grave with a fork. Yes you can drink yourself to death too, but that's not what we're talking about, it's whether even a little bit is ok. If some of your arguments are based off of health reasons including it being a poison to your body, you simply cannot ignore the food/gluttony issue. Not trying to be abrasive about this, but it really bothers me how our health as a nation is going down the tubes and we're doing nothing but getting fatter and having more health complications, yet I guess that's perfectly ok as long as they never drink a glass of wine, right?

Since the Bible says 'Look thou not,' and since the Bible says wine deceives, and since the Bible is clear Christ does not endorse alcoholic wine, it is more than the body at stake. The eternal soul is at stake also.

    So beer is better?

Boy are you deceived and deceiving many.

Beer Always Contains the Drug Lupulin
For at least 1200 years hops have been used to impart a bitter flavor to beer and malt liquors. And for a good many of these years we have used the word "hop" as a slang term for "dope" or a narcotic drug such as opium. We have referred to a person intoxicated with a narcotic as "hopped up". But do you realize that the hop plant and the hemp plant (from which the drug marijuana is produced) are closely related members of the same botanical family?
The active principle in hops is a fine, yellow resinous powder called "lupulin" which is always classified as a narcotic because it will dull the sense in moderate doses and cause stupor or coma in larger amounts. From lupulin come two lupulic acids - humulone and lupulone. One of these, "humulone", has the following chemical formula: C21H30O5. "Cannabinol", the active principle of marijuana, has the chemical formula.of C21H26O2.
From "lupulin" also comes hop oil used to give flavor to the beer. Within the hop oil is a chemical substance called "geraniol." By looking at its formula (C10H17OH) you can tell it is a member of the alcohol family. So, from the hops there is imparted to beer a small, but powerful, trace of another lethal member of the alcohol clan.
As far back as 1889, Dr. H.C. Wood wrote that hops had "a heavy narcotic odor", and today medical investigation has proved that narcotics are released from the hops when they are used in brewing.
Law enforcement authorities remind us that individuals drunk on beer are "harder to handle" and more "boisterous" than people intoxicated to the very same degree with any other alcoholic beverage. Lupulin and her lupulic acids are the culprits.
Beer Usually Contains One or More Chemical Additives
GUM ARABIC (acacia) is in common use by many breweries as a stabilizer to prevent any alteration on the beverage before it is sold. It also helps the foaming quality of the beer. Yet medical literature warns that "allergic reactions, liver and kidney damage may follow its use."
SODIUM HYDROSULFITE (Na2S2O4) is a white or grayish white salt of hydro-sulfurous acid which is used in industry as a "reducing and bleaching agent." But the brewer adds this potentially dangerous chemical to his beer to prevent the taste from becoming inferior and stop the deterioration of its flavor to insure a "perfect" brew.
COBALT (Co) has been used by at least two breweries to "prevent over-foaming" in three different brands of beer. Federal officials in the U.S. and Canada, as well as investigating physicians, have strongly implicated cobalt as the cause of 37 deaths and many other serious cases of "beer drinker's heart disease." In every case the heart muscles of the beer drinker slowly degenerated and finally stopped working.
TANNIC ACID (tannin), a yellowish to light brown substance, is used in tanning, dyeing and the manufacturing of ink. Taken internally it can be blamed for "arresting secretion, causing contraction of the tissues and arresting the flow of blood within the vessels." Tannic acid has been known to cause "gastric irritation" and "liver damage." Disregarding these dangers, many breweries use it to eliminate any sediment or "cloudiness" from their brands of beer.
AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE has many uses in industry - "fireproofing" fabrics, fertilizer, impregnating lamp wicks, preventing "after-glow" in matches, and as a flux for soldering tin, copper and brass. Beer companies use it to chemically "improve" or "correct" American water so that it will correspond with the water used in European brewing. (Have you ever been to Europe? DON'T drink the water!)
POTASSIUM METABISULFITE is used by brewers as "an antioxidant" to inhibit the chemical reactions taking place in the beer and prevent deterioration of the flavor. In industry this chemical is used for bleaching straw and as a source of sulfurous acid.
TARTARIC ACID (H2C4H4O6) is a colorless or translucent chemical used in photography and for silvering mirrors and coloring metals. It is occasionally used in medicine as a laxative. Some batches of beer are so cloudy and unappetizing no one would dare drink them. So, the brewer "doses" them with tartaric acid to take away the cloudiness and present "an appetizing appearance."
PAPAIN (papayotin) is a chemical additive akin to meat tenderizer, which prevents beer from "clotting." In medicine it is used as a solvent for warts and other external skin growths, but its internal use carries with it the warning that "certain individuals may exhibit severe gastrointestinal symptoms after ingestion." Yet, this chemical substance is widely used in the brewing industry.
MAGNESIUM SULFATE (MgSO4.7H2O) better known to most of us as a cathartic (or purgative) named "Epsom Salts" is the active ingredient in most of the advertised "laxative waters." Breweries rely on lots of Epsom Salts to "alter" the water they use in the brewing process, ignoring completely medical warnings which state it "can cause respiratory failure" and "renal (kidney) impairment."
DEXTRIN is a white, amorphorous powder used by brewers to insure a better head of light frothy bubbles on the surface of their beer. On the other hand, industry uses dextrin in the manufacture of matches, fireworks and explosives.
There is no regulation concerning the chemical content of beer. If a brewer wished, he could add many other dangerous chemicals to his brew and not break the law. You have no way of knowing what you are taking into your body when you drink beer.

Well, with that argument in mind, as far as I know, Jesus didn't endorse running and exercise, even though running and exercise existed and was fairly common back then, and too much running and exercise can hurt you... so should be believe that running and exercise is sinful? Noooo...

I just think that even if the only wine Jesus touched was non-alcoholic, there's no doubt that he knew it existed, it was all around him, he had knowledge of it. If it was as big of a deal to him as it is to some of you to even drink a little, I really think he would have just came out and said "look people, I don't want any of you to ever drink alcohol whatsoever, period". I have yet to see such a verse, so even though he's not endorsing it, I'm going to continue to believe that a little is ok, as long as I keep it at that level. I'm not even a social drinker, I'll just grab a beer while doing mundane yard chores or watching a movie, it's not like I'm big into the bar/party scene or anything.

You can make all the insane arguments you want:
    Jump off a cliff
Jump in front of a moving train.
Pretend your flying as you soar off the roof of your high rise.

Do what you want. Go ahead and kill yourself anyway you please. Your rationality has exceeded all bounds. This topic is not speaking of suicide, KFC, Macdonalds, etc. Keep on topic please!!!!!
The subject the point of intoxication (of wine), not of KFC. Please stay focused.
"Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is decieved thereby is not wise.?
This is what God's word has to say about wine, not KFC. Keep to the topic please.

I think that article is a little biased, but a couple of things worth mentioning... hops actually has some health benefits, but I won't bore you with the details.

As far as the long list of other crap... that's why I stay away from mass produced beer. Microbreweries are far less likely to put extra junk in there. If you can stick with beer that strictly goes by the German Purity Laws of 1516, the only ingredients in the beer whatsoever are water, hops, barley, and yeast.

Your red herrings are making you irrational here. Food, in general, is not poisonous. Do you eat it? If it is poisonous please refrain from eating food for the rest of your days. I have lived for over half a century and can count the number of alcoholic beverages that I have had on one hand. But I cannot count the number of meals I have had. I know which one is a poison.

Since doctor's have proven that alcohol enters the bloodstream from the moment it is ingested, and since the bloodstream goes to the brain, the point of intoxication is right after the first swallow.

Sorry, but the only reason I brought it up was because you made a specific point in regards to you shouldn't drink alcohol because it is a poison. I had simply figured that you didn't have any problems with all the other poisons you consume on a daily basis... just thought I'd throw out a few examples since you were apparently in the dark. I can keep on subject just fine, but to tell the truth, this subject is about the religious argument of whether it's ok to drink, not whether or not it's a poison... in which I didn't start... only tried to finish.

All depends on what you're eating, and what your definition of a poison is.

On a similar note, assuming that all forms of alcohol are spiritually bad... what about medications? Lots of medications are based on alcohol. Those of you who denounce even the smallest sip of wine... do you reach for the NyQuil when you're under the weather? If so, I think that would be hypocritical, it's the same stuff.

I do not drink the Nyquil. I drink Orange Juice at the onset of a cold. And take alcohol free medicines.

I wish I could do that, if that helps... as strange as it sounds, I'm allergic to orange juice, it triggers severe asthma, yet I don't normally have asthma. I drink a big glass of OJ, and I'm coughing my lungs out 20-30 minutes later. Orange juice is a poison to me.

For those who have ears to hear..
And for those who are hard of hearing,
    Let me repeat myself
Food, in general, is not poisonous
If you have a problem with that statement take it up with God the Creator who created it, go on strike, and stop eating. Please, be my guest. End of argument.

How long does it take to get rid of the effects of alcohol?

Q: How long does it take to get rid of the effects of alcohol?
A: A hangover is your body's way of grounding you and just as there is no remedy to sober up, there is no cure for a hangover other than time. The more you drink, the longer you're going to be grounded because it can take up to two hours for the body to get rid of the effects of one drink (one beer, one glass of wine, or a single shot of whisky). So even if you have one drink an hour, alcohol builds up in your blood because you are drinking faster than your body is burning that alcohol.

Q: So is alcohol an upper or a downer?
[IMG]A: Definitely a downer. It might seem like alcohol makes people more relaxed, outgoing, and active but these traits show up because alcohol is reducing the activity of the brain. Anything that lowers brain activity is a downer. This explains why alcohol slows reaction time and leads to poor judgment when driving.

    1. If you are drinking enough to even get close to the point where you could get a hangover... you're drinking too much.

    2. Hangovers are caused by dehydration, nothing else, but sometimes low blood sugar could make it seem worse. If somebody would chug a glass of water with every drink and eat enough to keep their blood sugar up, they wouldn't get a hangover in the first place... HOWEVER, I AM NOT BY ANY MEANS ENCOURAGING ANYBODY TO DRINK ANYWHERE NEAR THIS MUCH. This is not the kind of activity that I'm saying isn't that big of a deal.

I totally agree that healthy food in its natural state while in a well balanced diet as God intended is not poisonous as a whole. However, it is getting increasingly rarer to meet people who eat in this manner. We live in an age of highly processed foods and many of those foods have many poisons in them, plus even natural foods that are prepared incorrectly or too much of a particular kind of food can be a form of a poison. But, nobody seems to ever stop to consider this, and people just get mad when I point it out. Strange. Tuna and farm raised salmon have PCB's in them... pretty sure that's a poison... yet I'm pretty sure that's not something God did...

Then either start your own health food store, or another thread on that topic. This thread is not about other foods. Read the title of the thread and post to that topic. If you can't post to the topic of the thread your posts may be deleted.
