The Ukrainian Alamo: Another false story

For those who have not noticed, the story about the defenders of Snake Island who died turned out to be another lie: They are currently held prisoner on the Crimean Peninsula.

Zelensky even gave a eulogy:

"On our island Zmiiny (Snake Island), defending it to the last, all the border guards died heroically. But did not give up. All of them will be posthumously be awarded the title of ‘Hero of Ukraine.’ Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine.”

Far from being pleased with being prematurely eulogized several of the soldiers had choice words for Zelensky.

Some news outlets like BBC ("News you can trust") have still not updated their stories with the latest updates. The original story has better legs.

They were defiant, that is verified truth, and presumed dead.

You carry the water of Russian propaganda by declaring it a “lie” and claiming the soldiers had “choice words for Zelinsky”.

Are you a Russian troll on the BB?

peace to you

Presumed dead was a reasonable statement. I'm sure they are glad to find out they are alive.

Peace to you too.

Yes, like all good Russian trolls I went first to Fox News:

Snake Island defenders who defied Russian warship captured alive, not killed: Ukraine Navy
Thanks for the link.

I don’t see the word “lie” in the article, nor any mention of captured soldiers having “choice words” for Zelenski.

That was specifically what I referred to as Russian propaganda that you are repeating.

Thank you for admitting you are a Russian troll, but it is obvious to any paying attention.

To be clear, it’s probably more accurate to say you are a Russian apologist. IMO, you academic tendencies have left you indifferent to the brutal bloodshed Putin is inflicting in Ukraine.

You seem to think now is a good time to review Ukraine/Russian history. It comes across quite callus and uncaring.

peace to you

I had taught History, including European and Russian History, for many years. I was born in Germany and I have lived several places in Europe. I am pretty sure I know more about this than you.

True, the "choice words" was not in that link. It must have been from another one. If I find it again I will share it. I have been reading lots and lots of sites on this partly because I have lived eight months in Ukraine and have had friends there. And I wonder what is becoming of them, some Russians, others Ukrainian. Many of the places I now find out are being bombed by the Russians. Clearly Putin is overreacting and it hurts me to think of all these beautiful places being destroyed. So it is grating to hear you idiotically calling me indifferent and a Russian troll. You are one of the most clueless individuals here on this board.

I can only hope that you are young and will, eventually, gain some maturity.

As a KGB secret agent, I can confirm @asterisktom is not a Russian troll. I don't see him on the team roster that Putin gave me. My mission is to infiltrate the Baptist Board and learn the secrets of American Baptists. Infiltrating the BB is the lynchpin of Russian dominance. We cannot conquer the world without these Baptist secrets.

It is just amazing to read your posts. In trying to prove you are not “indifferent” to the suffering of the Ukrainian people, you state you are worried about what’s happening to your “friends” and all the “beautiful places” that are being bombed.

Nothing about the slaughter of innocents. Nothing about the hundreds of thousands of refugees. You prove yourself cold, callus and indifferent to the bloodshed Putin is pouring out on Ukraine.

The best criticism of Putin you can muster is that he has “over reacted”, which is propaganda in itself, since Putin is the aggressor and wasn’t “reacting” to anything.

It is not “clueless” or “idiotic” to point out you are repeating propaganda from pro-Russia/anti-American websites, which you have confirmed.

The only idiotic thing I could do is trust anything you post.

peace to you

You are one bitter individual with poor reading comprehension. No wonder so many people block you. Speaking of which.

Bitter? Not at all. My reading comprehension skills are quite high, as a matter of fact. Which is why you falter under the slightest scrutiny.

I don’t like the slaughter of innocents, nor the efforts of some to spew Russian propaganda concerning the slaughter of innocents.

This is the second time in as many days you claim to block me. That is fine. I never block anyone. I enjoy the discussion, though I admit to getting my feathers ruffled somewhat when people become arrogant and condescending towards me, as you have from the beginning.

It is funny how the arrogant and condescending are the first to run to “block” when their views are challenged.

I must have “triggered” you.

Peace to you

well, the Ukranian press isn't free, nor is Russia's (ours is on paper), so the propaganda is all over the place. The official Ukranian news outlet first said this:

Zmiinyi Island In Black Sea Attacked From Russian Ships - Border Service | Ukrainian news (ukranews.com)

then Zelensky claimed they all gave up their lives rather than surrender, but they really just surrendered, killing the narrative.

So, I don't think he lied, he had bad intel, which is almost as bad. Russia is putting out fake news:

Ukraine crisis: Is Russia waging an information war? - BBC News

but so is Ukraine:

Ukraine invasion: Misleading claims continue to go viral - BBC News

and as for the American media, they don't report, they are into setting a narrative, so, , ,

It is true and often said the first casualty of war is the truth.

I agree with pretty much everything you said.

peace to you

Considering this type of story is nothing new in a war. Let's look at what we do know for sure.
  1. It's based on radio intercepts of traffic between a Russian navy vessel and Ukrainian land installation.
  2. The Ukrainian radio went silent after Russian shelling.
  3. A presumption was made the Ukrainians were wiped out to the last man. This looks to be not the case.

Even though I called this story false and a lie I did not say who was most to blame. Probably the media mostly. Hard to find the truth. It was Aeschylus who said that ‘In war, truth is the first casualty.’

There is a lot of tiresome saber-rattling and cartooning of the opposition (Putin). And this complicated situation is simplified to fit in a breezy, short headline. Christians, of all people, should be more able to not be swayed by propagandizing - and all sides are doing it.

Consider this: What if Putin or Xi were supporting radical elements in northern Mexico (and there are some) who wanted to take back Texas and California from the US? After all, both territories were once part of Mexico. Would we not complain about this interference at our doorstep from countries that have no business in our affairs? Would we not finally, if all else fails resort to military action?

Well, this is what Putin is doing. We have, thanks to Clinton in the 90's, stretched the mission and reach of NATO all the way to Russia's doorstep.

How do people not see the similarity of situations?

Tom, I suggest you take a look at the news stories I have posted over the last two days. I have avoided posting stories from American sources. Instead, I amusing German (DW News), Polish (a Polish NGO), and British (TLDR and Forces News). And I don't see the similarity.

You have chosen to promote the Russian propaganda efforts in this conflict, completely ignoring the very big truth no one can deny. Ukrainians, men women and children, are being killed by Putin.

peace to you

Bingo. I've been comparing it to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Commies in the USSR stuck missiles on Cuba right on our border. We threatened war unless they were removed.

The West wanted to stick MORE weapons right on Russia's border with Ukraine. Putin threatened war unless these actions stopped. The actions continued, so he declared war.

In both situations the U.S and Russia were justified. If you take a fair look at both countries I don't see how people can't see similarities.

However, Putin is NOT justified to annex large swaths of Ukraine. If parts of Eastern Ukraine, where Russian sympathies already lie, are annexed then I'm not concerned about it. If he tries to annex central and western areas such as Kyiv, then he loses his justification in my eyes. Currently the war goal is to demilitarize Ukraine. If that is the outcome of the war then I see that as justifiable.

We would do the same with Mexico as you said, and we have in the past with Cuba.
