This issue was not made official Catholic doctrine. It was instead a position taken to advise local Bishops how they MIGHT respond as they exercize their pastoral functions at the local level.
This type of "FilIal Correction" is not without precedent, most recently the same thing happenend to Pope John the XXIII.
So contrary to popular belief, the Pope does not act alone but in conjunction with the whole Church and this particular matter is not fully settled.

The Holy Spirit protects the church from error, I'm told. That, along with papal infallibility, is actual catholic doctrine.

Yes, and the Holy Spirit is workibg through the other members of the Church to see that no error is prolumgated.
Remember when Pope Francis uttered the words "who am i to judge" concerning gays? Well, catholic doctrine has not changed one iota on this issue.

So tell me, as you interpret the Scriptures don't you believe that you are receiving the guidance if the Holy Spirit and if so, then aren't you also claiming a sort of infallibilty as you try to figure out what God is trying to tell you?
If not, then you must accept the possibilty that your scriptural interpretations are in error.
The Pope claims infallibility in matters of faith and morals and he just might be right and the rest of us wrong.
What the conservatives are upset about is that the Pope trying to figure out a way to let divorced Catholics receive Holy Communion without having received an annulment from the Church.
The Pope wants to let the local Bishops have some leeway in deciding whether to allow the fairhful a return to the sacraments because the local Bishop is more intmately involved with those concerned. This is not a blanket removal of the annulment process, but each case may be decided on an individual basis.

I was simply posing a question about the concept of infallibility. So then, you would have to admit that what you and others have come up with as regards scriptural interpretation can be in error, no?

The Holy Spirit must have failed then, for the theology of Rome is not what He inspired down in the Bible to us!
I did not know Luther was into trasgender and same sex marriage stuff though!
As this Pope wants to loosen up on these as being really sinful...
We recognize our hearts are wicked and we try to listen to the in dwelling Holy Spirit. We feel that to trust someone who you can accuse of spreading heresies seems really dumb.
There are different factions within the church both liberal and conservative. This letter was instgated by a group loyal to Pius X, a very conservative faction which thinks that the 2nd Vatican Council from the 1960's went too far left from the Catholic doctrines of the day.
Too bad the Church of Rome refused to heed the reformation, as that was last chance before Apostasy!

See the protestants botched up in the first move. They should have claimed to be the genuine church and say where are the others going.
Instead they abandoned, divided and left. They did not have the faith that God would back them up internally.
For people who swear "FAITH ALONE" how come they are required to act and then require the Catholic church to change?
Everyone here who is not catholic, left a faith, and would swear the very people who taught them Christianity to be wrong.
The don't have a correct lineage of christian teaching. They all have a parent religion they deem wrong in everyway, but oh wait that book YOU GAVE US, oh we have a better understanding of then you.
God commands us to ride a boat across the ocean. He tells you I made a boat, its right here take this one, he says stay on the boat Ill always protect it.
The boat starts leaking, the crew becomes mutinous, its not going the right direction.
So the reformist think okay we need a new boat and leave the old one, look we got better captain, better boat.
That is not faith alone.
If you actually practice what you preach, you stay in the boat God chose and place faith on him to correct it.
Split and start your own denomination? That is not faith alone at all. That is a complete lack of faith a failure.
Our greatest point of difference is we Catholics say you have to do the right thing to be saved, while you say its faith alone.

I completely reject your assertion. I am not a Protestant. Been through this with more than one catholic and am not entering into any circular arguments with any of them. You keep your catholic fantasies, as this post points out, the pope cannot possibly be infallible. All of the "what about you" posts will not change that.
