Trade war escalates as China says it will impose tariffs on 128 U.S. exports, including pork and fruit

The Chinese government plans to immediately impose tariffs on 128 U.S. products, including pork and certain fruits, a direct response to President Trump’s recent moves to pursue numerous trade restrictions against Beijing.

A number of U.S. agriculture firms have warned they could be caught in the middle of a trade war, particularly if Trump follows through on threats against China and Mexico.

Trump's idiotic inauguration of a trade war will have dire consequences for our agricultural industry and help our aluminum and steel industries very little.

So we have had little to no tariffs on products coming from china while they have imposed high tariffs on our products going to them. Why should we tolerate this? Who thinks such a deal between countries is fair or reasonable. Part of the reason our manufacturers left the US us because in our country they could not compete globally. I just talked with someone from the solar industry and that industry is looking forward to the tariffs.

If one truly is against tariffs, then he will be against all tariffs, including foreign tariffs against the US. That is the only true conservative position.

Yeah, I saw that, and I'm a little surprised, thought the omnibus bill would have dropped his support temporarily.

But I think many Americans, the majority, actually want a trade war - people that say they believe in free trade don't mean it unilaterally, and for the US, it is:

U.S. tariffs are among the lowest in the world – and in the nation’s history

the stock market is going crazy today, but they are always a jittery bunch.

Most understand that Trump is fighting 2 parties. There are always some that will blame the one fighting for them of not fighting hard enough. I think most are smarter than that. If you've got someone fighting for you and they lose some battles, it's the height of ingratitude to abandon them. When you think about it, it's kind of cowardly. You should turn to those fighting against your guy, and attack them. You should encourage your guy to keep fighting. But many conservatives are stupid in this regard. It's why we lose so often.

China is not singling out the US for tariffs. China assesses tariffs with almost all trading partners. The average tariff rate is 9.9%, call it 10%. They have free trade agreements with only a handful of nations, like Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, etc., nations in their general area of the world. Even then, there are still tariffs with these countries, though less than 10%.

Why should we tolerate tariffs on goods going into China?
What is the harm? Is our economy in trouble? Well, it was doing great until Trump decided to implement liberal, Democratic protectionist trade policies. Now the stock market has dropped nearly 10% and China is slapping more tariffs on US goods.

If you think the trade imbalance with China is a problem, then show us why it is a problem. Simply saying something isn't "fair" is not an argument. It's an emotional response. Trump's reaction and tariff policy reminds me of liberals that implement policy based on good intentions with scarcely a thought as to the outcomes and end result.

And there you have it. Supports tariffs against the US and opposes leveling the playing field. Call this what you want, but it's not free trade.

Well, running a huge trade deficit with a brutal Communist country can affect your emotions - you are right that this deficit is a mixed blessing, they are (or were) keep our interest rates low and I don't think they would EVER call in their treasuries and whenever any country owns 19 percent or so of the total debt owned by foreign countries it should give pause. That can lead to influence over American policies.

They've got low labor costs, a much poorer standard of living and about no environmental protections, so they can sell their goods here cheaper. American companies can't compete, so they either have to outsource or close up shop.

Never thought protectionism (and Trump is a protectionist) was a far left thing, labor unions traditionally support it but the paleoconservative wing of the GOP, people like Pat Buchanan, have been all on it, too.

This latest retaliation only comes to three billion, as opposed to Trump's fifty billion in tariffs, which may mean China is finally willing to negotiate here.

I am glad. Maybe they will quit building all these smelly chicken houses everywhere.

China and the USA are playing "Tariff Chicken".

In reality the "First Responder" importers will simply pass the cost on to the consumer.

I dont care if I have to pay more for my dog food.

In the longer run domestic or friendly fair trade nation products will increase to fill the gap.

I support President Trump on the tariff war.

China IS NOT our friend and won't be until the LORD returns.

I don't really care what his approval ratings are, just so long as he brings conservative changes to the nation. I think I've said this at least a half dozen times in the past year or so.

The tax reform and tax cut was a huge win. The repeal of the individual mandate was nice. The appointment of Gorsuch was huge. The cutting of regulations on business is huge. Appointing young, conservative judges to federal district courts is huge. These things are not going to be popular with the general public.

Well you've said a lot of things, things that lead me to believe you really don't want Trump to succeed.

I'll believe you're for these things if you support Trump is 2020. You didn't support him when he was running on these things and did your best to undermine him and help Hillary. I'll believe your actions not your words.

You didn't support him when he was running on these things

Rubio and Cruz and Walker and Perry and Huckabee and Paul and Fiorina all ran on these things. I could have supported any of them. So did Jeb, Carson, Christie, Jindal, and Graham. So basically every Republican ran on tax reform, tax cuts, appointing a pro-lifer to SCOTUS, repealing Obamacare, etc. etc.

and did your best to undermine him and help Hillary.

Hey everyone! In Calminan's world "Help Hillary" means going to the Minnesota caucus and voting for Rubio. It also means switching your allegiance to Cruz when Rubio dropped out in March, 2016. I didn't vote for Hillary, I didn't support Hillary. In Calminian's world if you didn't support Trump you supported Hillary.

Wow, you are being so dishonest. When Trump beat all of them and became the nominee, you campaigned against him daily. You did it every single day. You were Hillary's best ally. Now you claim to support Trump's policies? Bull! Support him in 2020 then I'll believe you.

PREDICTION: Into posterity until the LORD returns the progressive left will continuously attempt to prove that there was collusion or some kind of conspiracy (with who knows who or what) by certain sectors of the right that propelled Donald Trump into the presidency.

The tariff war would seem to eliminate China and Russia as collusion partners.

Years down the road (unless the LORD returns) the Clinton machine will publish "NEW" and "LIKELY" theories complete with unnamed but trustworthy sources that - Yes it was true - Trump colluded with Macedonians and stole the election.
